Well, if I’m going to treat V-Day, I’m doing it on my terms! I started looking on Pinterest for inspiration when I came across some really cool looking heart candle holders for sale on Etsy. They looked easy to make. There was just one problem: making it required a band saw, because the wood blocks were too thick for a jigsaw.

But most of you don’t. Why will? You are not woodworkers! So it didn’t make sense to show you how to make something most of you can’t do.
I mentioned to Handan that I wanted to make these heart candle holders, but I needed to be able to do that with a jigsaw.
They’re neat pants, so of course, I came up with the solution: Make each candle out of three pieces of 3/4-inch plywood glued together. The heart shape can easily be cut out of each piece with a jigsaw.

I have a lot of plywood scraps, so this project was a giveaway. If you don’t have plywood to go around, and if you’d rather not buy a large board, feel free to substitute 3/4 inch thick pine.
I glued the template pieces along both edges of the board. You can use a glue stick or spray tool for this step.
Then I cut out the core pieces with a jigsaw fitted with a Bosch T101-AO blade. With this blade you can make very precise cuts, almost like a scroll saw or band saw.
I used a speed square to help cut a straight line, but you can crank it up by hand if you have a steady hand.

Handan made a small extension of the table from some waste wood to help with the smaller cuts. These cuts had to be made by hand.
Of course, if you have a table saw it’s much faster and easier to use, but I want to point out that all of the cuts for this project can be made with a jigsaw.
Once I cut out all of my parts it was time to glue them together to form the candle holders. If your cuts are clean, you can make little hearts out of the cutouts.
Spread a very thin layer of glue over the pieces to be glued. If you apply the glue too thick, the pieces tend to slide off.

I let the glue dry for about an hour, then removed the two heart candle holders and lined the center of each top.
I drilled the tea hole 5/8 inch deep with a drill press, but it can also be done by hand. I recommend installing the candle holder before drilling, as a 1 1/2-inch Forstner can snap the piece right out of your hands if you’re not careful.
Note that the IKEA tea lights will not fit in a 1 1/2″ hole. For those, you’ll need a 1 9/16-inch Forstner bit. But all standard American tea lights, like those sold at Michaels, fit into a 1 1/2-inch hole.
I love the look of plywood, so instead of painting or staining, I finished these erasable polyurethane heart candle holders with a satin finish. Three or four layers are enough.
