How To Build Your Own Tall Outdoor Planter Boxes

You can build these as just planters, and skip the bench part if you want. But, a bench is a simple addition that is great for adding some extra seating to your patio or garden.

How To Build A Wooden Planter Box For Your Porch Or Patio
Since this is an outdoor project, I chose cedar wood since it is a natural water resistant wood and is available where I live.
However, there are some great wood options for outdoor use and you can use engineered wood, too.
If you want to use pine / spruce / whitewood without treatment, of course you can, just remember that it will not last long in the elements.
I used a selection of cedar blocks for the planter sides and bench seat. Cedar block options come as 1x6s and are typically 72 inches long. Of course you can use standard 1x6x8 boards instead, but the block options are much cheaper.
Diy Tiered Strawberry Planter
Remember that fence panels are LABELED 1×6. A regular 1×6 board is actually ¾″ x 5 ½″ but fence posts are actually ⅝″ x 5 ½″ wide, so they are a little shorter than regular boards. .
And they don’t have the right diameter—many of mine were a little more than 5 ½″ wide when I bought them.
Since there are potential differences in the fence panels, many of these panels need to be cut to fit. Therefore, a table layout is recommended for this project to make these cuts.
I used these 6.24 gallon nursery containers and built the planters to fit them so they just fit in and rest on the frame.
Easy And Inexpensive Wood Raised Planter Boxes For The Garden
However, you can certainly adjust your size to use a larger pot, or if you have small pots, you can add a small shelf in the planter to set your pot. This is covered in step 6.
You can attach this in a million ways, but I kept it simple and just attached this frame using 2 ½” long external screws.
You can use large decorative screws (like what I used in this DIY fence) if you want, or use pocket holes on the inside so you don’t see the holes.
I predrilled all the holes before driving the screws to help prevent splitting and I tried to space the screws out so they were slightly off center so they wouldn’t bump into each other at the corners. (Ignore the “serious face” below haha!)
How To Build A Diy Tapered Cedar Planter
I cut 8 pieces of cedar planks to line the inside of these frames and sanded them down nicely.
I used 1 ¼″ screws to insert two of these into two opposite sides of the planter frame so they were pushed to the far left and far right. This will leave a gap between them. See the image below.
Then, I installed two more on the other two sides as shown. There will probably be some small gaps between the boards – that’s fine. Just put them exactly right.
Once these pieces were in place, I measured out the pieces I needed to fill the first two sides. In theory they should be the same, but these fences have some differences, so it is better to measure and cut to fit.
Diy Kids Flower Box
Mine was about 1 ⅜” wide, so I tore two strips that wide on the table and screwed them in place.
At this point, the planters are technically complete, but I want to add X decorations on the sides. This is totally optional, but it really dresses up the pieces with nice details.
