How To Build Your Own Salmon Ladder

How To Build Your Own Salmon Ladder – Do you want to challenge yourself by training in the style of an American ninja warrior? Then you need the right equipment!

A salmon ladder is a great addition to any home gym. Although the ladder may look simple, this piece of equipment offers a strenuous workout. As you move up the stairs, you’ll test your upper body strength, endurance and explosive power.

How To Build Your Own Salmon Ladder

Building your own salmon ladder is easier than you think. With the right materials, you can make a salmon ladder in just a few hours. Plus, by using galvanized pipes and Kee Klamp fittings you can save a lot of money on the overall cost of this project.

Are you ready to get started? Let’s look at some examples of salmon ladders for inspiration. Then we’ll dive into the step-by-step instructions. You’ll soon be ready to train on your very own salmon ladder.

Let’s look at some salmon ladders for inspiration. Note that any ladder can be easily constructed with Kee Klamp fittings and galvanized pipes.

Kenny made this salmon ladder for his American Ninja Warrior Training Facility. He decided to use galvanized pipe, side outlet elbow fittings and rail support fittings in his design. Kenny chose these materials because they were easy to use, strong and “seemed like the cleanest, simplest way to go”.

This salmon ladder is made for the obstacle gym. To make a similar project at home, you can use galvanized pipe for the frame and wood for the corner bars. Use flanged joints to attach the ladder to the wall and floor for added stability.

It is very important to think about safety when designing your own salmon ladder. Be sure to place a mat with pads, like the one pictured here, near the base of the ladder in case you slip and fall during the exercise.

If you want to make a similar salmon ladder with less expensive materials, consider using angled Kee Klamp fittings, such as 11° to 30° single socket Tee fittings or angle elbows to make rungs.

Galvanized pipe also works well for the frame, and you’ll be moving up the salmon ladder for the rod.

This project shows that a salmon ladder doesn’t have to be complex to be effective. All you have to do is make a simple frame and add the crossbars. Salmon ladders can also be incorporated into most exercise equipment.

When making a salmon ladder, you need to make sure it is stable. You’ll be moving up the ladder quickly and you don’t want to worry about it falling apart mid-workout. Use a grounding jack to firmly anchor the frame into the ground.

Unlike the previous project, this project looks very complex. But this salmon ladder is easier to construct than it seems. The frame is made of industrial pipes, and the crossbars are painted pieces of wood. Use side exit elbows and 90° side exit joints to help build the vertical supports that make up both sides of the ladder.

First decide where you want your salmon ladder. This is also the time to decide if you want to use wooden rungs or stick with the Kee Klamp pipe and joint design. If you need help deciding, feel free to reach out to our design team for more ideas!

Once you’ve designed your ladder, gather the materials you need to build it. Materials will vary depending on where you want to place the ladder. But the main components are solid materials for the frame, crossbars and bar.

Now it’s time to build your ladder. Stary by constructing a frame. Then attach the crossbars. Make sure they are level and firmly attached to both sides of the ladder. Finally mount the frame. If you are building this outside, dig the holes, plant the legs and fill the holes with concrete. If you plan to build this inside, you can attach the ladder to the ground and wall using flanged fasteners.

Your ladder is now ready to go! Add a protective mat near the base, then channel your inner American Ninja Warrior as you climb the ladder.

Are you ready to make your own salmon ladder? We hope this post has inspired you to create your own gym gear!

If you need more help, don’t worry. Our design team is ready to help! We offer free design assistance to help you get started on your project. When you’re done, feel free to submit pictures of your project to our site. We’d love to see the salmon ladder you made! So I’ve had a few people ask me how I made this. It was relatively easy. I had my brother (Clayton) come in and help me with a few pieces. I was originally going to just do a salmon ladder, however, I saw a picture of someone who made a board to go with it. I couldn’t resist making one for myself (bottom picture). Which, by the way, is a whole new respect for anyone who can do it. I’ve been trying for a few weeks now and I’m barely able to do it, I guess I haven’t built enough muscle for it yet.

I’ll break this down for you by listing the materials you need and then the instructions for making it.

Step 1: Choose a spot in your yard, field, or wherever you want to put it. I chose a spot towards the back right corner of my yard. It’s kind of in the shade at different parts of the day (the reason I chose it).

Step 2: Measure the distance (I went with 3.5 ft spacing for the sides (6×6) going up) and mark it for digging with the hole digger. I say you need a shovel because a hole digger will not give you the width you need for a 6×6. You may also need to use your hand to scoop out some of the dirt. The important thing is to dig at least 2 feet. I did this because I wanted to make sure it was deep enough to be sturdy…

Step 3: Help may be needed. Nail the 6×6 into the holes. Use the level on the side to level it as you put the dirt in the hole. You can also get a concrete mixing bag and mix in some concrete to keep it from shifting. I didn’t do this because I will be moving out of this house and whoever moves in next might not like the salmon ladder in the backyard (Haha!). I wanted to make it easy for them to demonstrate. I used rocks and soil instead. The rocks prevent him from moving. Take a 6 foot level and go over the 6×6 to make sure they are set up correctly.

Step 4: Cut some 2×4s into pieces about 6 inches with a 35 degree angle on one side. You need these to grip the bar as you jump. You need however much you want to use for your height. I left with 1 foot from the top. Spaced about 7 or 8 inches apart. So I’m 4, I can jump. I think on American Ninja Warrior they are about 1 ft apart? Maybe the next one I make I’ll do that.

Step 5: Once you have the marks for the 2×4 pieces. Take the liquid nail and put it on the back and screw the mark with 3 screws. A liquid nail will give you extra support because sometimes you land on them quite hard.

Step 5: At the very top, take a 2×6 cut across both 6×6s as a cross brace to hold them both together.

Step 6: I used black iron pipe from Lowes. It’s a bit heavy. Maybe I’ll switch to something a little lighter. The first thing I used the tube for was a pretty good bend in the middle. I kind of felt like it was going to break so I switched to something a little thicker for more support.

Step 7: If you poured concrete then I don’t think you need any supports from the bottom. However, since I didn’t, I cut some 2×4’s at an angle and took some concrete pins to drive into the ground for a little more support to keep it from rocking back and forth.

I hope everyone enjoys this post as well as enjoying using their salmon ladders! It’s so much fun. I use it every day for my daily push-ups. It’s a great feeling to get out there and be able to say, “Hey, I made it.” If I could do anything differently, I would figure out some way to catch the bar in case I missed. I had an accident where I hit my forehead and nose. Maybe I gave myself a mild concussion? she didn’t go to the doctor. Pale, though. Anyway, don’t be discouraged from trying this! It’s so much fun!
