1: Containers. Flat nose pliers and round nose pliers are the only tools for making gold chain necklace.

2: Divide the second chain into two pieces and loop around the first chain, connecting them together.

This year I got my boyfriend a silver bar necklace with his name on it for Valentine’s Day and I’ve been dying for more personalized necklaces ever since.

There’s a way to seal metal! Once you’re comfortable with this process, you can do all kinds of personalized projects.

For the basic sealing process, you’ll want to press your sealing blank onto your iron bench block using masking tape.

The iron block provides a solid surface behind the blank, so your effect will look cleaner (trust me, I tried it on a softer surface first, and the effect was not as good).

Hold your tape in place and it will guide you to follow your sentence. If you want a different guideline, you can also place a piece of tape over the space, leaving a space higher than your letter.

Choose the knife brands that will make your sentence/name/tag and place them in front of you in the right order. Before you get halfway through your sentences, make sure they’re already turned the right way, knowing that you’ve hit the “R” in reverse. Completed.

If you’ve never stamped before, I’d recommend getting a bunch of cheap blanks (like these) to practice. It took a while to get the hang of it, and it helps to proofread your wording and warm up to your product before you stamp it.

Starting with your middle letter, place your stamp where it belongs on your blank space and use your fork to press the stamp out of the hammer, then hit a second time. The first light tap helps you feel where to hit, so you can land harder on the second hit.

Hitting multiple big hits can create a second ghost effect if your seal moves completely, but with a little practice, you should be able to hit multiple hits if you want a deeper effect.

I’ve noticed that my particular stroke style creates a lighter impression on the lower “hands” of some letters (like the lower leg of the R, which looks like a “P”). To make sure the entire letter is stamped, I give it an extra tap when I poke my knife stamp in a bit.

Once your first letter is placed, continue stamping letters on both sides until your sentence is complete.

To black out the letters, use a black marker and color on the wording you just stamped. Apply alcohol to a soft cloth and wipe the letters.

The marker should be removed from the surface but remain in the letters to make the sentence clearer.

Once you learn the basics, you can do whatever you want! To make the double bar and double pendant necklaces, I stamped two of the same loose words with matching phrases and cut a longer and shorter chain.

I used jump rings to attach the blanks to the chain and two more rings to attach the two chains to the bead closure.

Since I wanted the beads to be one piece with two chains instead of two separate beads, I only used one clasp for each bead. If you want to keep them separate, give each one its own closure and you can wear them together as a set or just one at a time.

Depending on the size of your branding space (no long, wordy phrases on those little bar beads, of course!) you can create your own phrase, anniversary dates, names, initials or hashtags. it’s a little fun.

At the bottom of my round necklace is the end of a quote from a Beethoven love letter that Todd and I wrote to each other that says “always ours” and I put our anniversary on it.

Of course I had to do a cat themed design for the short bar necklace with the initials of our cats (Mac & Charlie).
