Build Your Own Mudroom

Build Your Own Mudroom – In a few hours, Tom Silva and Kevin O’Connor turn a piece of MDF into a piece of furniture that provides both storage and seating.

Shoes, boots, and all kinds of messes pile up in our backyard and mud areas as we move from outside to inside. The accumulation reaches its peak in the winter when gloves, hats, and other coats are shed and lose the mystery they once again need.

In it is the advantage of mud seats, which have cubbies to break the things that happen on time and organize them well. It can also provide a place to sit while donning and removing shoes.

How To Create A Built In Mudroom

General contractor Tom Silva designed this chair out of just one 4×8 sheet of medium-density fiberboard (MDF), a hard, smooth, inexpensive material that takes on beautiful colors. He designed the seat to hold three woven baskets, but it wasn’t an option. Disadvantages for the types of furniture that are commonly used are the rigid building systems that use strong screws, joints, and a lot of glue sticks. Follow along in these pages as Tom uses these methods to put together a useful mud house design.

Shown: Tom and Kevin show off their latest project: three cubby storage chairs that took them just a few hours to make from scratch.

Following the cut list, cut the MDF into 14-inch sections. Leave the top and bottom as one 3-by-4-foot panel for now. Use a 180-grit sandpaper to smooth the face and edges. Mark a wide line on the 3-by-4-foot section 3⁄4 inches from each end, then two lines that are equidistant between them.

Using the guide, drill a 5⁄16″ deep dado on the edge of the end piece and down between the other marks. Cut off 3⁄4 inch from one side, as shown. A finger that ends in a chisel, then saw a long shaft in two ways. The top has recessed dadoes.

Make 3⁄4-inch rabbets on the bottom edge by removing one side of each dado. Then, use a small countersink to drive three pilot holes into each dado and rabbet, top and bottom, and along the back side of the top. Turn each hole from the front face of the board.

Place a stick of glue, such as Gorilla Wood Glue, inside the rabbit and apply it to both sides of the cut. Set the first distributor on the rabbit, then turn the assembly on its side to expose the countersunk pilot hole in the bottom piece. Ask for a helper or stand in the corner with a brace.

Align its edges with its ends, then drive screws into the three pilot holes and lower its head slightly. Turn the assembly horizontally and wipe off excess glue with a damp cloth. Spread glue in the next dado, tap on the divider with a mallet, and turn the screw as before. Repeat with other distributors.

Spread glue into the dadoes at the top, and, with the dividers resting vertically, keep the top in place, as shown. Tap it with a mallet. Check that the chiseled dado edge is firmly against the front side of the partition, and that there is a 3⁄4-inch gap behind. Drive three screws through the top and into each compartment.

Mudrooms: Built Ins Vs. Freestanding

Place a layer of glue on the top of the back piece and the back of the divider on the bottom piece. Press back into the glue line, then drive three screws through the top and back. Hold the braids or flying brads and move them back and forth.

Cut a piece of paper on both ends of the base face and one end of each side. Insert and nail the filler into each part; Glue and nail the end of the pair to each of the front metal. Screw in the center support nail, then the filler, on the back side to the front.

Apply glue to the edges of the filler and the center support, then, with a helper, place the cubby assembly on them. Run a brad through the center of the front of each cubby and into the front panels. Use 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out the scratched areas, then start on the paint.

For the finish, they applied a primer based on shellac and two coats of semigloss acrylic-latex paint. A dog makes a good chair.

You will need a few woodworking tools to complete this project. Here is the tool we used:

MDF 4 ‘X 8’ wood panels (we had them cut to the width we wanted at Home Depot) This saves a lot of time trying to cut this on a table saw at home.

Let’s start! We figured out how to cut the 4′ X 8′ MDF board before we went to Home Depot. We had them cut the boards to a width of 24″ for the base section and 13 3/4″ width for the entire top section. Then we cut them to length for each piece in the house and the table.

We chose a sheet of MDF for this project because it draws well and when you use a router you get better results, plywood requires a chip.

The project is designed in four separate units that will be assembled as they are assembled in place.

We made a jig out of scrap wood to hold the sailor. We use square framing to ensure that the jig is square. (Note the dado grove in the jig that will line up where the dado will be cut.)

Router 3/8″ deep and 3/4″ Dado router bit. In 58 3/4″ and 57 1/4″ pieces. Refer to the diagram for the installation of the dado cut.

Sand the edges of the three 13 3/4″ pieces, this will make it easier to insert them into the dado.

Mark with a pencil the center of the dado on the other side of the wood. This is the row for inserting the brad.

Spread wood glue on the dado, place the 13 3/4″ piece on the dado, tap with a rubber mallet if necessary to get it into position.

Place 3 brads along the pencil line, keeping the piece in place, repeat for each side. Secure both sides with glue and brads, with the main part 4″ in front. (refer to the base diagram)

Now that you’ve completed one of these sections, take a breath and enjoy your beautiful artwork! It will be a breeze to complete the other sections. The same method is used only in different parts.

Dado of 57 1/4″ pieces, the same way to use, see drawing for installation.

Cut 2 5 1/2″ pine boards to 57 1/4″. Use a jigsaw to cut 2 notches on a 43 3/4″ board (1″ X 5 1/2″) across and 13 1/2″ from the top. These bones are where the pine will be placed (the cover hooks will be placed here.) This will also add stability to this page. (Note that the back of this enclosure is only wall mounted.)

Place the side piece (44 1/8″) glue and nail in place. Place the 2.1″ X 5 1/2″ board. Nail in place the 11″ X 5 1/2″ board over the side. each cubby. See the diagram for installation.

Mudroom Bench With Easy Drawers

Now that the second section is finished it’s time to move on to the upper cubby section. (This is 2 separate pieces with 4 cubbies each.) Cut the 13 3/4″ wide boards as follows:

The seat is made from a piece of oak plywood up to 24″ X 60 1/2″, a piece of 1″ X 2″ is joined to the oak and hung on the side. We put the dark stuff on it before we assemble the whole part.

Next to the oak seat is mounted on the bottom of the hood covered with brads. Then the part is placed on top of the head and secured with a few brads from the cubby base to the oak plywood.

Finally, the upper cubbies are added and hung again on the coat hook section and then the last cubby and brads are placed on the other cubby section. Next, we use corner brackets to mount the top of the storage unit to the wall, inside the studs.

Mudroom Locker Tutorial

To raise the header piece (11 1/4”) we attached some 2 X 4’s to the side of the house, connecting it to the post. Cut the header to length and match it to the bottom edge of the cubby above and screw it into place. To complete the cabinet and
