The first US Senior Open was won at Saucon Valley CC in 1992 by cigar cutter Larry Lauretti, who won by four strokes. Hale Irwin won his second US Senior Open at the Old Course in 2000, shooting a 65 in the final to defeat third-round leader Bruce Fleischer by three strokes.

The Old Course: In 1920 a group of 16 business leaders acquired 205 acres of land from Bethlehem Steel. Herbert Strong’s design began in 1922. It has hosted the past seven USGA events. Improvements have been made by William Gordon, Perry Maxwell, and most recently in 2008 by Tom Marzolf of the Fazio Group.

Addition: A second 18-hole course, the Grace Course, designed by William and David Gordon, was completed in 1957. The Wehill course, designed by William and David Gordon, was completed in 1968.

Hole No. 1: Saddleback, par 5, 555 yards; Generous landing area for drivers; A narrow fairway and three bunkers make reaching the two greens a challenge

2: Roadside, 472 yards; A 300-yard drive over a hill led to a steeply uneven green with a short iron; The hole has been tough in the past two US Senior Opens and the 2009 US Women’s Open.

3: Kuran, Part 4, 374; Dogleg left, second shot slants over Saucon Creek to the green (back to front), which brings the ball back into the water after more spin; Fairway rough is tough on the course

10: Buttonwood, par 4, 330 yards; For what is its length, it has seven deep bunkers protecting the fairway and the back left to right green.

11: Plateau, Par 3, 183 yards; A large uphill hole with bunkers, a green guarded with a steep slope from back to front; Going from the tee to the green does not guarantee a par; A short time is better than a long time; Hard to pin back

14: Willow, par 4, 422 yards; The dog’s left hole requires a well-placed tee shot to the right to see the green well; The Saucon Creek fairway runs 50 yards in front of the green

15: Lake, Par 4, 351 yards; Beautiful that can be secretly dangerous; Deep rough bunkers to the left and right of the fairway make finding an uphill approach to the steeply sloping (back-and-forth) green more difficult.

Notes to self: Areas designated for minors 18 and under are adjacent to the practice green. Beyond this area, fans are asked to refrain from autographing the player as he approaches his first tee until the end of his round. Violations of the policy may result in expulsion and loss of ticketing privileges for the remainder of the championship.

First Aid Centers: They are located adjacent to the ninth green and 11th hole and are staffed by doctors and other licensed professionals. Breastfeeding stations and complementary water are also provided at all first aid centers and other fan-centric locations. In the event of a medical emergency, notify a volunteer, security guard, or USGA official.

Hydration Stations: They are located behind the eighth tee, the 18th fairway, the ninth green and on the players’ left side. You can visit any first aid tent to refill water. Fans may bring an empty water bottle 32 ounces or less, as long as it is clean and not glass.

Merchandise: Fan Central has a 10,000 square foot merchandise pavilion as you enter through Gate 1. Adjacent to the entrance from the 19th hole is the Satellite Commercial Tent. They are open from Tuesday to Sunday. It will be open from 7 hours after the end of the play on that day. Fans must have a ticket or ID to gain entry to the championship.
