Trying To Get Out Of Depression

Trying To Get Out Of Depression

Trying To Get Out Of Depression – One of my coping strategies for chronic depression is to get out of the house every day. When I have an episode, most days I open my eyes, sigh in frustration, and then begin a battle of internal dialogue.

… Staying in bed won’t hurt anyone. You’ve had a busy couple of days. Besides, nothing bad will happen if you stay here in your cozy warm bed.

Trying To Get Out Of Depression

1. I admit that I am blessed to have a part-time job that I love. So I have to leave the house three days a week. It has made a huge difference in my mental health. Don’t have a job or can’t get a job? Try volunteering. It is commitment without pressure. Before I was healthy enough to get paid work, I volunteered at the local kids club, church and mutual support group.

2. Agree to have tea or coffee in a cute cafe at least once a week with a “no pressure” friend.

4. Contact your local community center or mental health support service. There are many government-funded organizations that organize activities (such as choirs, art classes, computer classes, gardens and community tours) and mutual support groups for people with mental or physical illness.

6. Order! I like to go to theater and cinema. Booking tickets in advance can force you to leave the house to avoid spending good money on something fun.

7. Make a list of all the things you want to do when your mental health is good. Send a copy to people in your support network. It is often outdated to tell someone with depression, “Do what you love.” A common symptom of depression is that you can’t think about the things you want. This is where my list comes in handy. It reminds me (and others) of activities that can get me out of the house/bed and lift my spirits. Even if it’s short, it’s worth it.

8. Give yourself credit where it’s due. Don’t be hard on yourself if you end up staying in bed or at home all day. Learning to cope with mental illness is a long learning process. Sleep a bad day and sleep early, because tomorrow is a new day.

I’ll be the first to admit that balancing mental health and physical illness strategies can be difficult. For example, for five days I have been constantly dizzy and unable to drive, leave the house or operate machinery (in this case some appliances/stoves). On those days when I’m sick or in pain, my goal is to get out of bed, brush my teeth, eat, or watch Netflix while sitting in the sun. If I can add a shower, play with crayons, paint, read, greet a visitor or go to the mailbox, it’s a productive day. Then, when I recover or the flare-up passes, I’ll start leaving the house again.

Coping With Depression

“On particularly difficult days when I’m sure I can’t make it through, I like to remind myself that my record for surviving bad days is currently 100%, and that’s pretty good.”

“Sometimes you get out of bed in the morning and think I’m not going to make it, but you laugh to yourself, remembering all the times you’ve felt that way.

Depression makes you hide inside yourself. But hiding your feelings (or not feeling them, numbing them) won’t help you heal.

Stop Trying To Push Yourself Out Of Depression!

Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more frequent and more difficult to bear. Often, trying to hide emotional pain adds to the burden. It is easier to say “I have a toothache” than to say “My heart is broken”.

“I am bent, but not broken.” I have a scar, but I’m not disfigured. I am sad, but not hopeless. I’m tired, but I’m not weak. I’m angry, but not bitter. “I’m depressed, but I’m not giving up.”

Giving up when you have a mental illness like depression sounds appealing in your darkest moments. But take comfort in the depression quote above and don’t give up.

“If you know someone who is depressed, decide never to ask them why. Depression is not just a reaction to a bad situation; depression is like the weather.”
