Solar Energy For Kids

Solar Energy For Kids – Solar energy is all the rage as we as a society move towards greener energy sources. As we move away from carbon-based energy globally, solar energy is the next natural step because it’s cleaner and more renewable. Solar panels used to be reserved for those with large bank accounts, but now we see them everywhere!

Helping your child learn more about how solar energy works can help them become better scientists, engineers, and environmentalists. Win/Win for everyone!

Solar Power Information And Facts

You’ve probably seen solar panels power homes, schools, car charging stations, street lights, pool heaters, and more. Scientists and engineers working on developing powered vehicles like trains and cars!

Then you go out and walk around and see what solar panels are around you.

Solar panels use energy from the sun and convert it into electricity. The panel consists of many photovoltaic cells that absorb photons of light particles. When the sun hits a cell, photons in the sun excite electrons in the cell. These electrons travel in the solar cell until they reach the electrodes that capture the current.

The current produced is direct current (DC), but your home needs alternating current (AC) for appliances, lights, and more. The panel also includes a converter to convert it to the correct format. Homeowners with solar panels can power their own homes, send extra power to the grid, and help their neighbors too!

They co-chair the DOE Commission on Innovative Research and Assistance and Environmental Mitigation (InSPIRE).

Project InSPIRE has 30 solar farms across the country serving as research sites for how low-impact solar development can improve soil health, retain moisture, cultivate native species, produce food and provide energy to communities at a lower cost.

Both Davis and McNick, fathers of LEGO-loving kids, thought the solar farm kit was the perfect way to learn about low-impact solar power. “Solar energy is primarily portrayed as a self-sustaining system,” McNick said. “But energy, water and food are basic and interconnected needs of life. Solar farm designs can make these systems mutually beneficial. Our LEGO solar farm designs can help children and adults imagine these different ways of thinking.

LEGO allows fans to submit design concepts for public voting. If the project gets 10,000 votes from those with a free LEGO Ideas account, the company’s experts will review it and possibly approve it as an official set to hit store shelves around the world.

How To Teach Kids About Renewable Solar Energy

LEGO currently has a wind turbine kit, a modern house kit with solar power on the roof, and some LEGO space kits with solar panels, but no solar farming kits. “The LEGO ISS set was originally submitted on the company’s creative platform,” Davis said. “When my kids and I built it, we kept talking about what a LEGO solar farm should look like.”

Some solar projects combine flowering vegetation with beehives, some include growing vegetables in fields, and larger projects are grazing vegetation and flocks of sheep. Davis and his friends, with Macknick’s help, designed a solar farm with ground cover for pollinators, beehives, grazing sheep, inverter control boxes and engineer/manager/shepherd. The set contains 375 pieces and can be expanded to include multiple sets that can be combined together to build a larger project.

To accompany the kit, McNick and Davis produced an instruction manual about solar farms and their spin-offs, such as higher crop yields, lower water requirements and higher solar panel efficiency.

“As a kid, I used to jump into Lego blocks,” McNick said. “It’s really cool to see the prototype a year after production.

The sun’s energy is produced through a process called nuclear fusion. Every second, the sun emits a huge amount of energy, most of which is light. This sunlight can be converted into electricity!

Solar panels are found all over the world, but they are cheapest in sunny places.

Researchers at the University of Sheffield are currently investigating how much energy the sun can produce. The project is called PV_Live – it allows you to view solar power generation

Solar cells, also known as photovoltaics (PV cells), convert direct sunlight into electricity. When sunlight hits the cell surface, it causes electrons to move. This creates a current in each battery that combines to produce a useful amount of electricity.
