Amarjit Sohi told the G7 energy ministers’ meeting on Friday that the $30 million contribution to the $117 million tidal project to harness the enormous power of the Bay of Fundy is one of the grants to spur innovation in emerging sectors around the world. land
Tidal is one of the first investments to come out of the federal Liberals’ $200 million renewable energy program, which will close its call for proposals this spring and hopes to select four to six investments by spring 2019.
Officials say the program has received applications ranging from giant offshore wind turbines and concentrated solar photovoltaic projects to large geothermal projects in the West.

Meanwhile, tide reports on the East Coast are being watched closely to see if it can overcome the challenges of harnessing the Gulf’s powerful tides, which have already damaged early test turbines.
Led by Ireland’s DP Energy, the project aims to have power generation turbines online by 2020, generating enough electricity for more than 2,500 homes.
“This is an investment in the future,” Sohi said on the third day of meetings of environment, oceans and energy ministers when asked about the safety of the taxpayers’ $30 million investment.
“This is one announcement and part of many others we’re making to drive that innovation to [harness] the potential that would otherwise go untapped if the government wasn’t there to support it.”

He compared the nascent tidal industry to the early days of oil and gas, saying fossil fuels may never have emerged without the government taking on some of the risk.
Stephen Thomas, energy campaign coordinator for the Halifax Environmental Action Center, said in a telephone interview that environmental groups support funding for several offshore renewable energy projects — with some caveats.
“Giving $30 million in subsidies to this tidal wave project is still a drop in the bucket compared to the subsidies the fossil fuel industry receives, which takes hundreds of millions to billions from the federal government every year in chalk, depending on the year,” he said.
While we fund these projects, we always keep a close eye on those programs. We are monitoring their progress – Natural Resources Minister Amarjit Sohi

“We hope that DP Energy will take seriously the very valid concerns of Mi’kmaq communities and fishermen,” he said, referring to the opposition that has arisen over the potential threat to marine life from the Fundy turbines.
“When this turbine goes live in 2020, a lot of work has to be done first, building relationships and improving environmental monitoring.”
The Tidal project comes after several important battles to create tidal projects in the Bay of Fundy.
An Irish engineering team is trying to figure out why the Cape Sharp Tidal turbine rotor isn’t turning.
Canadian Solar Industry Ready For Alberta’s New Solar Program
Company Emera Inc. of Halifax, which was involved in the troubled project, said this week that experts believe a failure in a generator component caused enough damage to prevent the rotors from turning.
It said the turbine had been operating since it was commissioned in July and it was not yet clear when it failed.
Emera remains a shareholder in Cape Sharp Tidal, but recently announced it would withdraw from the project after co-owner OpenHidro filed for bankruptcy protection.
Sohi said his department has assessed the risks to taxpayer dollars and is closely monitoring the pilot projects.

During the G7 meeting, delegates also talked about the emerging potential of offshore wind energy as another opportunity for the Canadian coast.
Paul Simmons, deputy director of the International Energy Agency, told G7 ministers that a recent study by his research group shows that offshore renewable energy, particularly offshore wind, is making rapid progress.

Simmons told ministers that there were now fewer restrictions on the size of projects and that wind turbines had become larger, even with higher offshore wind speeds.
As a result, generated capacity has been much more stable, and total offshore wind production has increased from 3 gigawatts in 2010 to 17 gigawatts in 2017, almost all of it in the European Union.
“We predict that offshore … could be cheaper than wind power (energy) or solar power (energy) in 2040,” the energy expert said.
