In the energy sector, fossil fuels are the main source of energy because of their relatively low cost. However, our energy demand is expected to increase in the future and we will no longer be able to rely on limited and polluting energy sources. Over the past decade, we have seen a positive shift towards expanding our renewable energy capacity locally and globally.
Solar panels, offshore wind turbines and hydropower are among the alternative energy technologies that will meet our future energy needs. Our dependence on natural gas and oil is one of the biggest causes of environmental damage and is responsible for a 1.7% increase in carbon dioxide emissions into our atmosphere in the energy sector alone. To prevent further consequences of climate change on our planet the main focus will be on alternative energy sources.
According to IRENA’s annual renewable capacity figures for 2019, global renewable energy capacity reached 2,351 GW. Three alternative energy sources account for the highest percentage:
By 2023, the number of alternative energy sources is expected to increase in every sector. Electricity is the largest share of the power sector – 30%, and on the way to decarbonization, electricity will be the main energy carrier, most of which will be produced at the expense of renewable energy.
In second place is heating with 12%, and last is the transport sector with only 3.8% of alternative energy sources that can be improved.
