Former bartender and current author Kristen Bailey draws on research and extensive experience in the field of alcoholism to teach you about hangover shots and how to fix them—and the secrets to getting through them.

Given how many overdoses occur worldwide on any given day, this ubiquitous phenomenon is poorly understood by science—and much of the research on overdose causes and treatments is conflicting and inconclusive.
We know that many factors go into suspension. One of the most cited review articles on this topic, I’ll call it “the paper,” by Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center researcher Dr. It was co-written by Robert Swift. This paper details the eight most important effects of alcohol on your body and how they contribute to your morning woes.
Alcohol increases urine production by decreasing urine output, hormones that prevent the kidneys from conserving water. That’s why you should rinse often after drinking alcohol.
Electrolytes, such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium, are charged minerals in your body that help you stay hydrated, balance your pH, and transport nutrients to and from your cells. Dehydration can cause an electrolyte imbalance, and vomiting and diarrhea can cause your body to lose more of them.
Alcohol increases the production of gastric acid in the stomach and delays gastric emptying, causing digestive distress. Alcohol also increases intestinal and pancreatic secretions and can cause pancreatitis.
Symptoms: Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and/or natural diarrhea You may find yourself sleeping on the bathroom floor with a towel for a pillow.
Alcohol inhibits the production of glucose in the body, reduces the storage of glucose in the liver and causes the accumulation of lactic acid in the body fluids, which further inhibits the production of glucose. Blood sugar is your body’s main source of energy, and your brain depends on it to process information, store memories, and think clearly.
Although alcohol is a sedative, it shortens your REM sleep time, increases snoring and insomnia, and disrupts circadian rhythms, body temperature, and cortisol levels.
Hangover headaches can be related to atherosclerosis or alcohol-induced dilation of blood vessels and nerve pain and alcohol’s effects on hormones.
Symptoms: Severe, painful headaches, hypersensitive to sound, touch and movement, and feathers falling on your head can be the end of you.
Slow metabolizers of alcohol may experience more severe hangovers than fast metabolizers due to the effects of oxidative stress and inflammation. How you metabolize alcohol depends on your genes, biology, age, gender, and other factors.
By depressing the central nervous system, the drink increases the activity of the calm-inducing neurotransmitter GABA and suppresses the activity of the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. When alcohol leaves the blood, GABA decreases and glutamate is no longer inhibited.
Typically, hangovers begin within hours of the last drink, which lowers the blood alcohol content (BAC). It usually lasts 8 to 24 hours. When you reach zero BAC, which you can measure yourself with your breath, you’ll probably feel really bad. After that things should improve day by day.
Cleanse with rubbing alcohol to avoid a nasty hangover. Compounds including tannins and acetone are biologically active compounds found in high concentrations in dark spirits such as bourbon, red wine, and Jägermeister. Researchers attribute their taste, smell and color to alcohol – and according to research, they can make hangovers worse.
The only guarantee of execution is time. But the limited addiction research that exists provides us with many science-based options for reducing suffering and integrating recovery.
Below are hangover remedies based on scientific sources of treatment, but more importantly, an unscientific survey to see what works for my drinking friends on social media. Maybe their ideas are backed by science, maybe not. But, if you think it might help, check it out.

Your first order of business when you wake up is dog poop, hydrate, hydrate. Not only are you dehydrated, but you may also need electrolytes to help hydrate and balance your pH levels.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, hydrating hangovers with plenty of water — along with low-sugar sports drinks, electrolyte drinks, or coconut water and salt water — can provide sweet relief. The article suggests that caffeine may counteract the “fatigue and fatigue” associated with asthma.
Eating hangovers restores normal blood sugar levels and relieves nausea, weakness, and fatigue. Food can also help with those painful headaches. Most importantly, food will stimulate you and you will feel better once you flush out those toxins.
Science says the science is scarce on this point, but the recommendations are all over the map. Harvard Medical School recommends carbohydrates, especially clay and juice. The Cleveland Clinic confirms that the natural sugars in honey and fruit can help flush alcohol out of your system faster.
Dietary supplements can help relieve your asthma symptoms. Herbs have many healing properties and high nutritional value that help restore and restore the normal functioning of our body systems.
Science Says Harvard cites a study showing that taking B vitamins and zinc can reduce the severity of asthma attacks. There are many asthma remedies on the market that contain a variety of therapeutic ingredients including milk powder, lycopene, sprouted pears, B vitamins, ginger, ginseng, black pepper, vitamins C and E, zinc and magnesium.
Speaking of which, have you heard of Calm Gump? It’s a magnesium citrate supplement that I’ve since heard that many people like to soften the sharp edges after a night of overindulgence.
The next best thing is to just try to cool off while riding the cable car. Respondents to my very unscientific social media survey said they do this to find relief and solace in their hangovers:
Sleep is great for hangovers. Not only does sleep get you out of your misery, it also speeds up your body’s healing process. If you’re at home, lie down on your comfy couch or curl up in bed.

Unfortunately, because everyone’s body is different, there is no one-size-fits-all suspension. You have to find what works for you and it’s probably a combination of things.
First, you need to remember that there is no magic solution to your problem. Most of the “asthma remedies” you can find at the convenience store aren’t really helpful, so you might as well save your money. Some other suspension supplements may help you get relief, but it’s important to make sure your research is safe.
