Alison: It depends on the look you want. Clipped Goldendoodles with longer hair require professional grooming every 6-8 weeks. If you keep your goldendoodle in a shorter clip, you can take him in for grooming every 8-10 weeks.

Alison: I prefer the picture to the description! I find that often the descriptions someone gives me don’t match the picture in their head. A photo is best to show what you want.
Allison: Grooming in the Cincinnati area typically costs $50-$80 depending on the size of the dog and whether or not the coat is matted. Goldendoodles generally like to bathe, but chlorine is very good for their coat. If your dog regularly swims in a chlorine pool, put a short clip on him.
Allison: My two brushes of choice are a curling brush and a metal comb. I use it on all goldendoodles regardless of coat type.
Alison: Honestly, it depends on the length of the hair. A short clip may not need brushing until it starts to grow out, while a long clip may need to be brushed daily. A curly coat requires more frequent brushing. Be sure to also brush your dog’s fur after a walk, and of course brush your dog before and after a bath.

Alison: You don’t need to wash your goldendoodle between grooming appointments unless it’s smelly or dirty. Try to bathe your goldendoodle maybe once a month. Frequent bathing can dry out your dog’s skin, which can lead to itching. If you notice that your goldendoodle has a persistent bad odor, check for a yeast infection. If you’ve cut back on bathing and your golden retriever seems itchy, try switching to a chicken-free, grain-free dog food like Fromm’s.
Allison: I really like Fresh & Clean because it’s an oatmeal shampoo with a built-in conditioner, which means no extra washing. I also love the Show Season shampoo.
Besides regular brushing and occasional bathing, what else should I do with my goldendoodle at home between appointments?
Alison: Check your golden’s ears regularly, pull hair out of the ear canal if necessary and make sure there are no odors in the ears.

Alison: Any Andis slicer is a good choice. If you’re just doing a sanitary clip, one or two quick cutters will do. If you plan to do general maintenance, consider the more expensive Andis five-speed trimmers.
