Build Your Own Butcher Block Table

Build Your Own Butcher Block Table – Something new in the studio that I’m so excited to show you! A few weeks ago I was sharing the new lounge or living space in the studio. I badly needed another desktop in the studio. I am working on a simple white table and legs from Ikea. But when that table is used in the shoot, I end up setting things up on the floor! I also needed a wood tone table to shoot on all the white walls in the studio.

Butcher block was the perfect table top I needed. I wanted something that would be durable and last forever! I also wanted real wood. The butcher block is quite heavy so adding castor table legs was a must. I can roll the table from the workspace in front of the brick and windows and then to the big white wall to shoot. I am thrilled with how my DIY butcher block table turned out.

Build Your Own Butcher Block Table

I used a 5.5 foot piece of butcher block from the hardware store. Ikea also sells a butcher block table.

How To Make A Wood Cutting Board

Building the table is so simple! Make sure the ends are sanded if the butcher block is cut to the size you need. Drill the Ikea table legs into the bottom of the butcher block. Make sure the screws do not go into the table top (depending on the size of your table). Also, make sure someone helps you turn the table over when you’re done. Butcher Block is heavy and difficult to roll over on these castor table legs.

Once you’ve assembled your butcher block table, it’s time to grease the butcher block. I love this natural oil and conditioner.

Butcher Block Island Table Solid Wood Butcher Dining Table

Contributor Christopher Beidel, owner of Pernt, a handcrafted furniture company in Brooklyn, New York, shows you how to put together this modern take on the classic kitchen island.

Start with the table facing down. Measure and mark the piece with cutouts for the countertop and counter bottom. Tighten the straightedge adjacent to the first line as a guide for the saw. Keep clamps out of the path of the saw. Apply tape over the line to minimize tearing. Use a new 40 tooth carbide tipped blade and adjust its depth to ¼ inch more than the thickness of the wood. Make your first cut. Clamp the direction again, glue the second line and make the cut.

Using a 100-grit disc on a random orbit sander, sand the cut edges to remove the blade marks. Change to discs of successively larger grit and sand until the cut is as smooth as the uncut surface.

On your work surface, lay out all parts, including flanges and fittings, from top to bottom according to the dimensional drawings. There should be 15 pieces of threaded pipe of various lengths, nine tee fittings and four flanges.

How To Build A Modern Diy Desk With Butcher Block

To determine the width, start by assembling the five sections of the step that connects to the stretcher. The center tee is horizontal and the side tees are vertical. Although we use standardized, pre-cut tubing, expect some variation in threading between pieces. It’s a good idea to gently tighten the pieces by hand as you work, keeping in mind that you’ll need to loosen some ties and tighten others to get the proper lengths.

Thread the seven pieces of the base scale. Stand on your work surface and compare its width with the width of the stretcher ladder – they should be the same. Turn the T fitting on one end and then the other end, a full rotation at the same time, until both connections line up with those on the stretcher ladder as shown. Repeating this for each stage will give you a straight scale.

To keep the stepladder stable on the base while you work, you can temporarily screw the flanges to the work surface, as shown. Now use the base as a reference for each new step. You will need to tighten and loosen the pieces during the assembly process to adjust the length. Don’t worry if some of the pieces seem a little loose in their fittings – they won’t come together once the whole island.

Thread the second stage of the vertical pieces into place. Thread the fittings on the second rung, then place them on the threads of the vertical pipes. Now withdraw the vertical pipes from their lower fittings, about half way, until the upper threads engage with the fittings above. As you work, keep both sides of the ladder at the same height and tie a belt around the ladder to hold it in place. After the top step is in place, thread the short vertical pipes and flanges.

Place the pieces for the opposite side of the towel bar. You will need four flanges, eleven pieces of threaded pipe, four tee fittings and two elbows. Repeat all of step 3 to build the side of the towel bar. It is critical that the horizontal tee fittings on both sides are lined up so that the stretcher and shelf are flush. Stand from the side of the towel rail to the side of the ladder to compare and adjust the flanges, as shown, to match the heights.

With the side of the ladder still attached upright to your work surface, thread the stretcher tube into the tee fitting.

Remove the bolts from the flanges on the side of the ladder and lay the side flat with the stretcher pointing up. Place the tee connector on the towel bar side of the stretcher threads. Twist the entire side of the towel bar as shown to roll the fitting with the stretcher until the pieces fit snugly and the sides line up properly.

The shelf is made up of two planks, one shorter than the other to create notches that fit the stairs. Place the top board in place on the stretcher ladder, one end flush with the outside of the frame. At the other end, mark the board where it runs past the step. Use the miter square to guide the circular saw, as shown, to make the cut. Mark the bottom shelf to fit between the steps and cut it to length.

Place the long board face down on the work surface. Use a section of pipe to get the right distance for the shorter board. Apply glue to the joint between the boards and clamp the short board in place on your marks. Using your drill/driver, countersink the pilot holes and screw the boards together from the underside of the shelf as shown to hide the fasteners. Use 1-inch flat head screws No. 10 every 10 inches around the perimeter.

It is easiest to assemble the island right in the kitchen. Place the lower butchers counter on a temporary work surface. Place the pipe frame on it and use
