The quilt ladder is a project we use almost every day in this Sherpa quilt loving house. My kids are always spinning, even in the summer. A quilt ladder makes a very easy place to hang quilts, and I think it looks pretty too. 🙂

Build Your Own Blanket Ladder

This blanket ladder cost less than $5 to make, so it also makes a fantastic homemade gift idea. We have had 5 “blanket ladders” over the last 5 years. I wanted to make a new quilt ladder with improvements. This ladder is taller at 72″ (6″), has 6 rungs, optional angled ladder legs (risers) and the all-important felt pads to protect the wall. It’s my wall paint

How To Build A Wooden Blanket Ladder Tutorial

Cut 2 boards to 72 inches long. I use a circular saw and a straight edge to make the cuts. But you can use whatever tool you’re comfortable with to cut wood: a jigsaw, a jigsaw, a handsaw, or if you’re my dad… a leatherworker. 🙂

Now that the stair treads are marked, decide if you want corners at the bottom and top of your stair treads. If you do, do the optional angles below: if not, go to step 2.

Bottom of leg – Mark 1/2″ on the back of the bottom of the leg. Draw a straight line from the front corner to the 1/2 inch mark. OR make a 10 meter cut in the bottom with a miter saw.

Top of Leg – Mark 4 1/4 inches down at the back of the top of the leg. Also at the top, mark over 3/4 inch from the back corner. Draw a straight line between the marks and cut along the line.

Cut 6 pieces of 1×3 that are 17 inches long. Then punch pocket holes for 3/4 inch material at both ends.

(Alt assembly method: If you don’t want to use pocket holes, you can attach the stair treads to the legs by using screws or nails through the outside of the legs to the treads.)

Time to attach the ladder rungs to the ladder legs. Use wood glue and 1 1/4 inch pocket hole screws (or the alt method) to attach to the legs with the pre-measured marks.

Attach the ladder rungs to the legs using 1 1/4-inch or longer screws or nails through the outside of the legs to the rungs.

After the wood glue dries, remove the excess glue. Sand the ladder smooth. I used 80 grit and work up to 220 grit. Then apply your favorite stain, once the stain is dry apply a top coat like polyurethane. I used Varathane Aged Wood Accelerator for this stair “stain”. Easy to apply, paint on the wood with a brush or cloth, then wipe off the excess.

While building this $5 blanket ladder, I was reviewing the Ryobi One+ 6-Tool Combo Kit. It looks just like my first Ryobi kit I bought 14 years ago (back in the old blue Ryobi days). This kit is a good starter kit for homeowners.

If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen this beauty picture I took over the weekend. We have cold winters here in Utah. I love warm weather and long for summer every winter, but I love watching the snow cover our beautiful mountains and snuggling up in a warm sweater while watching a movie. So this weekend I decided to stay home and make a fun blanket ladder to hold our throws. This ladder would also work well as a towel holder in the bathroom.

There are dozens of variations of these ladders, this is my own image. If there is one like it out there, I haven’t seen it. I didn’t want to use dowels for the platforms as it would have made it more difficult to attach them to the sides. So I used 2×2. The sides are 2×3. This ladder is 6′ tall. I only spent $6 for the wood. Greetings

The cut list. Easy. Had the nice guy at Lowe’s do all my cuts so I brought all the pieces home ready to assemble.

*  and drilled 3/4 inch pocket holes at the end of each rung. I then used 1 1/2 inch pocket screws to attach.

You can attach the rungs to the side with 3 inch wood screws. I would recommend drilling pilot holes first if using this option.

Once it was assembled, I gave it a light sanding and painted it. I dabbed the stain with a clean cloth, let it sit for 5 minutes, then wiped off the excess. The finish I used is driftwood. You can of course use any finish you like 🙂

Here comes the fun part. This is completely optional. I wanted to add a fun and unique detail. I found these beautiful decorative L shaped corner guards*

. They come in a box of 8. I love the look and they also cover the pocket holes. Victory victory! The nails that come with them are too small. I got a regular nail and drilled a hole and then put in my little nail so I could drive it in without catching it. A bit time consuming I guess, but worth the effort. You can get longer black nails to begin with instead of using the ones that come with the brackets. There are also many variations of these corner guards, so find one you like and get creative when decorating your staircase.

So from a price point of view the brackets were a large part of the cost of this ladder since I used 20 of them. If you’re on a budget, definitely skip them. But I thought they added a fun detail.

One last point, these brackets are for decorative purposes only. They are not strong enough to connect the ladder without screws.

The first two things you will want to do is determine the height of the ladder, as well as the angle at which you want your ladder to sit against the wall.

I have about 10′ ceilings, so I decided to make our ladder about 6′ 4″ (76″). (Not too high and not too low.) You can cut the 2×4s to any height that works for your space.

How To Make A Blanket Ladder For $25!

Then slide a thin book/box or tape up the bottom of the 2×4 and draw a line parallel to the floor.

This will be your cutting line for the bottom of the two × 4’s so your ladder sits flat. Go ahead and cut the first 2×4 that you painted the sign on, then use that as a guide for the next one…

I cut the 1×4 into (5) 16″ pieces. (You can cut the lengths to your preference if you want the ladder to be wider or
