Diy Pallet Headboard Ideas With Instructions
Work on a clean surface. Use necessary safety precautions. Measure and cut your planks to fit your piece – measurements are for a perfect build and you may find your headboard is slightly off. So on trims and tops, measure to fit, using the given cut list as an approximate measurement. Use glue and check the square after each step.
Foot. Start building the pins by attaching the 1×2 middle piece to the 1×3 front leg piece, as shown above. To hide your nail holes, attach the 1×2 board to the back of the 1×3 board. Keep the outside edges flat.
Panel piece. Starting at the top, fasten the panel pieces as shown above. The red pieces are the 1×4 board, the blue the 1×6 board. Use 1 1/4″ nails and glue. Check square. Hide your nail holes as you did in step 1.
Back Legs. Use 2″ nails and glue to secure the back of the legs. Fasten to the panel pieces and the midfoot piece. Keep the outside edges flat.

Cut pieces. Start by securing the front trim using the 1 1/4″ nail and nail through the back to the back edge of the front trim. This will hide your nail holes. Then secure the back edge in place with a 2-inch nail and glue.
Top decoration. As shown above, measure and cut your top trim. The distance will be the overall width of the headboard at this step. Keeping the top trim level with the outer legs and front of the headboard, use 2-inch nails and glue to secure in place.
The top of the bed. Cut the top of the headboard 1 inch longer than the trim in step 6. Mark 1/2 inch from all sides. Center it on the headboard and secure with 2 inch glue and nails.
In progress. Fill any visible nail holes with wood and sand filler and finish as desired. The bed frame can be attached by drilling holes in the front of the legs and using mounting bolts and nuts into the openings on the inside of the legs. * Be sure to let the wood dry before building. In particular, cedar slats often have a high moisture content, so let them dry for about a week before closing the headboard to prevent shrinkage.

Use an angle saw to cut the 4×4 pins down to size. Next, cut the 2×4 planks and slats lengthwise for both the headboard and footboard. You can find the measurements in the DIY Pete Bed Frame packages, which you can download in PDF format.
Use an orbital sander with 120 grit sandpaper. Flatten the surfaces and go around the ends to clean up rough edges. If you are using a cedar hoe, you will need to spend more time sanding them as they often have a rough finish due to the mill. Simply sand the planks until they are slightly smooth but still have texture.

Use the pocket die to make pocket holes on the 2×4 board. Short boards will need 2 pocket holes on each end Three of the longer boards will need 2 pocket holes on each end. Perimeter boards will also need pocket holes in the opposite direction. Just put the board in the mold as I am doing in the photo below. They will look like pocket holes with arrows pointing to them once completed.
Use 2 1/2 inch pocket hole screws to connect the boards. Be sure to use wood glue at the ends of each short board.
Attach the pins to the 2×4 frame using 2 1/2 inch pocket hole screws and wood glue. I used 1-inch thick boards as spacers to prop the 2×4s off the table. This way the frame is centered between the 4×4 pins. Please refer to my video tutorial for more information.

Glue and nail in place. I used 16 inch long 1/4 inch long nails. Use 2 nails in each position. I used 4 picks. If they don’t fit perfectly, you can always trim a width with a table saw.
The headboard is made using the same methods we used for the footboard. Drill pocket holes and connect them to form your frame.
Support the frame with 1-inch planks (spacers) so that the frame is centered 4×4.
In addition to attaching the top 2×4 board from the bottom with 2 1/2-inch pocket screws, I added two top-down 3-inch wood screws on each end through the 2×4 and into the 4×4. You have The holes can be filled with wood putty to hide them if desired.

Attach the cedar slats. I used 5 full sets of grips and tore down the 6th set to about 2 inches wide on my table saw for a perfect fit.
Cut the 2×8 boards to the length indicated in the plan. Cut the 2×2 board to the same length.
Connect the 2 × 2 to the 2 × 8 using a 2 1/2 inch long wood screw and wood glue. The 2×2 board will hold the box spring in place.
Now it’s time to choose a finish for your project. For the DIY bed frame, I chose Minwax Clear Semi-Gloss Polyurethane. This is an oil-based sealant that will bring out the rich color of the wood. The knots will darken and the wood will have a warm sheen. For those of you who prefer a rougher finish, I strongly recommend Minwax Water-Based Polyurethane. I used Minwax Water Based Polyurethane in my recent DIY barn door project. Apply sealant with a good quality brush. Wear a respirator while applying sealant or make sure to stay in a well-ventilated area.

This product is very easy to apply. Comb back and forth and do not brush too thickly. If you have a few drops here and there, just brush them off.
Allow the sealant plenty of time to dry. Drying time will vary depending on temperature and humidity. I was able to lightly sand with 600-800 grit sandpaper after about 12 hours. Light sanding will smooth the surface and remove rough spots.
After sanding, apply a second layer of very light glue. Let the final coat dry and leave the bed frame in the garage for a few days to air out before bringing it inside.
