Before replacing the fuel pump or installing the fuel pump module, it is important to clean the fuel tank. Otherwise, there is a risk of a return if contamination from the dirty tank causes the new pump to fail. Learn more about how to clean your tank in ten easy steps. Additionally, Delphi Technologies offers a simple fuel tank cleaning kit to help get the job done.

For example, when replacing the fuel pump with parts FG1052, FG1053 or FG1588, we have redesigned the wiring to reduce the risk of overheating, so you should pay attention to the instructions on the box.

The fuel pump is the heart of any car, and when it comes time to build a high-horsepower car, why do so many car enthusiasts neglect to upgrade such an important part? It’s worth noting that when building a high horsepower car, the fuel injector can only flow through your fuel pump. The fuel pump must not only supply fuel to the engine, but must supply enough to atomize the injectors, force a steady stream into the coils, and allow the correct air/fuel mixture to burn in the cylinders. Factory fuel pumps are often inadequate to fuel modified engines. For example, many Hondas/Acuras with turbo kits still use the original factory pump. A Honda factory pump is a reliable and economical unit for an average 140hp daily driver car, but there are a number of factors to consider when you have a turbocharger. More important is the demand for increased fuel consumption.

We randomly selected ten of the most popular fuel pumps on the tuner market, put them to the test, then went to RC Engineering in Torrance, California to install them on our custom dynamometer. We pushed each pump to its maximum capacity using settings from 35 to 100 psi. Testing an old or new fuel pump with a fuel pump dynamometer takes the guesswork out of whether your unit is capable of providing adequate fuel flow for a given pressure and variable voltage. RC’s custom fuel pump dynamometer can test all fuel pump specifications, including maximum fuel pump flow capacity, psi, fuel temperature, pounds per hour, liters per hour, cc per minute, amperage, and brake horsepower (bhp). We note that the average density of gasoline for testing is 690 to 760 g/h (or 5.76 to 6.34 pounds per gallon). Using the calibration fluid against standard gasoline allows each fuel pump to be tested precisely because the calibration fluid is 0.76 S/G, which is the density of typical gasoline found at local pumps. The experiment was conducted at an atmospheric temperature of 76°C. Before presenting the final results for each pump tested, I thought it would be useful for all readers to summarize the key fuel pump specifications.

When building a high horsepower car, it’s important to use the correct formula to determine the amount of fuel your fuel pump needs to support. Considering variables such as engine displacement, compression ratio, and boost pressure, the final power output of the engine will increase or decrease depending on the capacity of the fuel pump and whether the correct air-fuel ratio is maintained throughout the powertrain. Although most tests show increased horsepower and flow, it is not recommended to run the fuel pump at higher voltages if the vehicle is used daily. Increased stress increases the wear of the pump’s internal components and significantly shortens its service life.

Your engine will use a certain amount of fuel to produce horsepower. This amount is known as Brake Specific Fuel Consumption or BSFC. First we need to define BSFC. BSFC is how much fuel an engine needs to produce “x” amount of power. The lower the number, the more efficient the injector works. BSFC varies depending on whether the car is naturally aspirated or turbocharged. For any car, the BSFC will be between .45 and .50. This means that the engine will use 50 pounds of fuel per hour for every horsepower it produces. For turbo engines, the weight is .55 to .60 lb/hr or more, depending on whether the engine is running on pump gas or race fuel. If the car runs on racing fuel, the BSFC is slightly lower.

For example, let’s say we use a vehicle with 200 horsepower to the crankshaft that implements a BSFC of 0.50 in our formula. If you take 200 horsepower and multiply it by 0.50, the engine requires 100 pounds of fuel per hour (200 x .50 = 100 L/hr). For a 400 hp turbo engine, we use a BSFC of 0.60 to calculate that the pump must flow at least 240 pounds of fuel per hour (400 x .60 = 240 L/hr). When changing

Description : Converting from a carbureted fuel system to electronic fuel injection (EFI) improves the performance, driveability, and fuel economy of any classic vehicle. Through a series of sensors, processors, and wires, it gathers engine and atmospheric information to precisely deliver the correct amount of fuel to your engine. With a carburetor, you must manually adjust and change parts to adapt it to differing conditions and applications. Installing a complete aftermarket EFI system may seem too complex, but it is within your reach by using the clear and easy-to-understand, step-by-step instructions. You will be able to confidently install the correct EFI system in your vehicle and enjoy all the benefits. A variety of EFI Systems are currently available--throttle body injection (TBI), multi port fuel injection (MPFI), stack systems, application specific, and special application systems. Author Tony Candela reveals the attributes of each, so you can select the system that's ideal for your car. Author Tony Candela explains in exceptional detail how to install both of these systems. To achieve top performance from an EFI system, it’s not a simple bolt-on and plug-in procedure. This book takes the mystery out of EFI so it’s not a black art but rather a clear working set of parameters. You are shown how to professionally install the injectors into the intake system as well as how to integrate the wiring into the main harness. In addition, each step of upgrading the fuel system to support the EFI is explained. The book also delves into integrating ignition and computer control with these aftermarket systems so you can be out driving rather than struggling with tuning. Turbocharged, supercharged, and nitrous applications are also covered. A well-installed and -tuned EFI system greatly improves the performance of a classic V-8 or any engine because the system delivers the correct fuel mixture for every operating condition. Get faster starts, better fuel economy, and crisp efficient performance. In EFI Conversions: How to Swap Your Carb for Electronic Fuel Injection, achieving all these benefits is easily within your reach....
