Aftermarket 360 Camera Install – Depending on the car manufacturer, you may have heard the 360-degree camera called by different names. 360-Surround, Bird’s-eye view, and Surround-View are probably the three most popular alternatives to 360-degrees. But a rose by any other name, right?

It all started with the 2008 Infiniti EX35 and was called the Around View Monitor. Like so much automotive technology, 360-degree cameras have gained serious traction in recent years. Now Infiniti offers it in every one of its cars and SUVs.

In this article, we’ll go over all the issues, costs, and questions about this great technology and give you some price vs. cost points to consider:

Due to its growing popularity, the 360 camera is almost an indispensable tool in the safety-and-driver-aid arsenals of new cars. For example, except for its MX-5 Miata, Mazda offers its 360-degree View Monitor on all its models. That includes the Mazda3 ($33, 100 Turbo Premium Plus trim).

However, there is a significant drawback. Its higher-ticket add-on price for most cars, trucks, and SUVs can be a deal-breaker. Here are some examples of costs associated with upgrading to this desirable technology:

The issue at this price point begs the question: Is a 360-degree camera worth the extra cost? Let’s take a look, but first, let’s get out of the way what gives it significant value as a safety feature.

The 360-degree camera is a technology that shows a view from above your vehicle and its surroundings. That is, the image projected on the display screen of your car is similar to a drone or blimp to shoot. Also, a split view image and proximity alert are other features that partner with a 360-degree camera.

Combining that top-view of your car and the surrounding area requires at least four cameras. However, there may be more.

It starts with the rearview camera, a government-mandated feature on all new cars, light trucks, and SUVs. Often, you’ll find side-view cameras mounted on outboard rearview mirrors. Finally, a grille or front fascia camera captures the forward view.

The image you see on your display screen is the product of a software program engineered to stitch the four views into a single coherent image seamlessly.

Sadly, most non-luxury car makers don’t offer 360-degree camera technology in their entry-level vehicles. This is partly due to the cost of the cameras and the software required to produce the surround-view image. Finding this feature will be easier if you’ve reached the higher trim lineups of most non-fancy brands.

Luxury brands are more likely to offer 360-degree technology in their lower-end models. For example, the GLA-Class is the Mercedes-Benz entry-level SUV. Its base 2022 GLA 250 ($36,400) provides a Parking Assistance Package ($1,090) that includes the Surround View system. At the same time, the Volvo XC40, with a suggested retail price of $36,195 for the entry-level Momentum, offers Volvo’s 360-degree Surround View Camera in its optional $4,050 Advanced Package.

Cadillac’s entry-level XT4 crossover in its top Premium Luxury grade ($39,595) offers its HD Surround Vision in the $1,500 Enhanced Visibility Package. Opt for Cadillac’s entry-level CT4 sedan in its Premium Luxury trim ($38,595), and you can add the HD Surround Vision feature with the Super Cruise 1 Package ($3,600).

The Nissan is a significant exception to the $35,000 rule. It’s leading the charge in the democratization of 360-degree cameras with models priced below $35,000, offering the feature.

Nissan offers its Intelligent Around View Monitor in each of its crossovers, starting with the 2022 Nissan Kicks. It’s standard on the Kicks SR, which is priced at $22,340.

But other Nissan Models hit the higher $30K+ mark. The all-electric Leaf SV with the Technology Package makes it $30,290. Even the Altima Platinum has it for $34,350. Additionally, the Nissan Rogue Sport SL ($30,710) and the Rogue SL ($32 , 400) also include the 360-camera feature and the price tag to match.

As for Toyota’s offerings, it’s not available on the Toyota Corolla or CH-R. However, the t is available on the Venza, RAV4, and some other higher grades like the Highlander, Tacoma, Sienna, Tundra, and Avalon. Toyota’s most affordable models with its Birds-Eye-View Camera are the Tacoma TRD Sport ($33,610) and the RAV4 Limited with the Advanced Tech Package ($37,575).

Here’s a sample list of brands that currently offer a 360-camera safety device in at least one of their models.

Even if properly installed, the big “but” is that an aftermarket system is unlikely to perform as well as a factory-installed one. Factory systems benefit from engineers adjusting cameras and camera locations to a specific model. A one-size-fits-all aftermarket system can’t do that.

There are many aftermarket 360-degree camera kits for sale. Usually, they come with four cameras, the necessary cables, and a control box. Some kits may also have a display screen or remote control.

Prices run the gamut from $200 to $900, and that’s just for the kit. Having a third-party install your equipment can easily add another $300 to $500 to the total.

Of course, if you’re handy, have the tools, and have plenty of space to work with, you can install the kit yourself. However, there is more to it than simply attaching cameras to your car and interfacing them with the control unit.

But be aware that a fair amount of noodling, measuring, and calibration is involved in properly aiming and locating cameras.

Affordable means different things to different people. We think anyone shopping for a vehicle in that $20,000-$30,000 range probably isn’t willing to pay a few thousand more for a 360-degree camera.

If you find yourself in that boat, you should probably check out one of the more affordable Nissan, Mazda, Hyundai, Toyota, or Mitsubishi models.

Surround View Cameras Installation Project Completed

Perhaps stress-free parking is worth the initial $7,000 to $10,000 it will cost to buy a vehicle that provides surround view. But probably not.

On the other hand, it is worth considering if one of the more affordable models equipped with it is attractive to you. This fact is especially true if you are somewhere in the low $30,000 ballpark. Adding it for an extra $1,500-$2,000 might be worth stretching your budget a bit.

The bottom line is a 360-degree camera is a great feature. After you experience it, you’ll never want to park without it again. Only you can decide if it is affordable.
