A final example of renewable energy is biomass. Biomass energy refers to any energy produced from recently living organic matter such as plants or animals. Biomass is a renewable resource because plants are renewable, and they grow using the sun’s renewable energy. Fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel (for cars and trucks) also come from biomass.
Biomass fuels are also considered “carbon neutral,” meaning they do not add additional carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. This is believed to be true because, in principle, as long as new plants are planted and grown, the plants are harvested and burned for energy, the new plants absorb the carbon produced by burning, resulting in no carbon being added to the atmosphere. .
