Office Of Energy Efficiency And Renewable Energy – IREC and partners today announced the launch of a three-year, $2.1 million project funded by the US Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) to reduce barriers to deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs). Education and resources to improve the knowledge of 30,000 security professionals.
Construction, fencing and security personnel play a critical role in the safe, widespread and rapid deployment of new technologies that make the network more resilient and resilient. These include energy storage systems (ESS), electric vehicles (EV) and energy efficient building technologies. However, these emerging technologies create an urgent need for up-to-date training for this audience beyond code and existing educational resources.
By increasing the awareness and confidence of these key stakeholders to allow and verify DER, the project will significantly reduce the barriers to DER deployment. The project faces several unique challenges: rapidly changing emerging technologies, the evolving needs of those at the forefront of DER adoption, and the ability to cost-effectively reach a national audience.

The project will create a widely accessible DER Information Clearinghouse website to provide expert information on clean energy regulations, standards, permits and inspections. Educational content and resources are regularly added to this clearinghouse website, designed to appeal to a diverse audience. In addition, IREC will develop modular online training for project assessment and verification of solar PV systems, energy storage systems and electricity charging infrastructure.
The team members participating in IREC for this project are experts in their field: International Code Council (ICC); International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI); National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM); Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL); University of Central Florida – FSEC Energy Research Center (UCF-FSEC); Energy Conservation Association (ESA); and UL LLC.
Each partner brings a critical perspective of their stakeholders to inform educational decisions, as well as extensive networks that enable the team to bring thousands of people to the website to expand knowledge and confidence in DER technologies. The team previously collaborated on a project funded by the US Department of Energy that successfully trained 15,000 code officers and fire officials in solar technology.
