What you will build. This project is a modern and revolutionary version of the distortion circuit that first appeared in Electra’s MPC (Modular Powered Circuits) guitar, a Japanese ax with outputs exported to the U.S. and Saint Louis Music in the late ’70s and early aughts. ’80s (Figure 1). The guitar wasn’t very popular, but at some point savvy boutique stompbox builders realized that despite (or maybe because of) the circuit’s simplicity, it produced some seriously dangerous tones. It’s a great alternative to the Tube Screamer design found in probably 90 percent of today’s overdrive pedals.
We call our Electra distortion PG Distortion (Figure 2). Compared to the Screamer, the PG Distortion is less aggressive, more mid-range heavy, and more responsive to your playing style. It protects against note attacks and has side grinding that goes through the platform and into the mix. It has been used in a number of well-known bottles (just Google the term “electra twist”).
