How To Build My Own Headboard

Today I wanted to share the easiest tutorial on the internet to make your own DIY wood slat headboard for your bed! We have a queen size bed, but you can customize it and create it for any bed size! First, here is a list of the materials and tools you will need for this DIY project.

A Step By Step Guide For A Diy Statement Headboard

So here’s a slow motion version of the header because that video was a sped up time lapse. Mainly I just wanted to make sure you had a visual for the text! 🙂

First, you’ll want to decide how big you want the headboard to be. In our room, we have a very small master bedroom with awkwardly placed windows, so the best solution was to put the headboard against the wall (on the right side of the bed) and on the edge of the left side of the bed to leave the room between that left window. Here is a side view of our workspace.

This is the only photo I took of the entire headboard. Yes, there are linens and old blankets on the bed. Yes, the lighting is terrible. Yes, the window does not have any coverings. It was a tough One Room Challenge! BUT this will give you a good idea of the placement of the headboard. Let’s pay attention only to the beautiful and modern headboard made of wooden slats. K? 🙂

Guys, you can believe it! That’s it! This was SO incredibly quick and easy! Measure your wood/space, cut your wood, nail your wood! BAM! And now you have a modern wood slatted headboard for every bed in your home! I also wanted to add a little “nightstand” on Scot’s side of the bed. I did this by taking a scrap piece of plywood and nailing it to the headboard. Here’s what it looked like when installed.

Diy headboard diy headboard wooden headboard how to build a headboard modern headboard headboard tutorial diy headboard1 Comment In this tutorial I will show you how to build a headboard. I’ll list all the tools and materials you’ll need for the project and give you step-by-step instructions for each step. But first, a little background on this DIY headboard I made for my daughter. She found a headboard for her dorm room that she really liked. Of course she asked me if I could build it for her. And of course I couldn’t say no. It’s a simple design that’s super easy to put together, and I’ll show you exactly how to do it in this tutorial!

Before we get started, if you’re looking for a bigger project, you might want to check out the whole DIY bed I made.

My daughter gave me short notice on this project which meant I didn’t have much time to complete it. So I decided to keep it very simple with a limited amount of pieces. I let the boards and spacing determine the overall height of the headboard.

How To Make A Reclaimed Wood Headboard With New Wood For Less Than $50

I laid all the boards and used two quarters (as in coins) as spacers between each one. I then measured the total height of all the boards with the spacers (quarters) installed, which was 30 5/16″.

You can use almost any type of wood for the back of the headboard as you won’t see it. It should only be 3/4″ thick. I used some scrap 1×12 cedar that I had left over from our build.

I cut all the cedar pieces to 30 5/16″, which was the height of the headboard I measured in step 1.

I placed these two panels above and below. Next, glue and nail the two cedar boards to the back as shown above, making sure all the corners are flush.

Then I added the rest of the cedar wood. When I got to the last board, it was too wide. So I measured how wide it needed to be and cut it to the right width with a table saw.

After nailing and gluing all the back pieces in place, I turned the headboard over to add the remaining poplar boards to the front. I cut three more pieces of 1×6 and five pieces of 1×3, all 53″ long.

Using 2 quarters as spacers, I glued and nailed the front boards in place alternating between 1x6s and 1x3s. I nailed them from the bottom so there would be no nail holes in the front of the headboard.

Once I was done with all the front pieces, it was time to add the 1x2s around the edge of the headboard. I cut two pieces of 1×2 poplar 31 13/16″ long and two pieces 54″ long, all with a 45 degree angle on each end.

After nailing the last piece of wood, I filled all the nail holes with wood putty. The only holes I filled were the ones in the edges. All other holes were on the back of the headboard. Since the back won’t show, I wasn’t worried about it.

My daughter wanted a light and airy look for her bedroom, so we decided that the color of the headboard would be very close to his light natural shade. I applied one layer of light gray glaze.

I hung the headboard on the wall behind her bed as a picture. First, I located the studs in the wall and attached the metal hangers on the back of the headboard in the places that correspond to the stud locations.

I then drove some screws into the studs and made sure they lined up. And finally I got the headboard up on the screws.

How To Build A Headboard And Bed Frame Diy Projects Craft Ideas & How To’s For Home Decor With Videos

Now that you know how to build a headboard, hopefully you can use this tutorial to create one for yourself or someone you know! Your bed is a special place. A place to recharge, a place to rest and a place to relax. It’s probably the first thing you see when you walk into your bedroom, and you want it to make a statement. But you don’t have to spend $1,000 to get a chic-to-death headboard. You can make a beautiful headboard yourself.

Rachel Valente says this was the first big DIY project she’s ever taken on and, honestly, wow. One thing that held her back from the start was the lack of space to build a large project.

“I have a small apartment with no garage space, so I pushed everything out of my dining room to make room for it,” she says. “But it showed me that you can always start somewhere, and we’re all capable of doing something new that we’ve never done before.”

“I wanted a low-budget headboard, but at the same time I wanted a chic one,” says Jonali of All That I Home. “As most of us know, if you can’t buy it, make it yourself!”

We feel it. Jonali said she first planned her design with a hand-woven mat that she knew she wanted to incorporate into the bed frame. She only had to build the basic frame.

She then took measurements and purchased laminated commercial plywood for about $30. She said she chose laminated because of the smoother look, but if you use MDF it’s already smooth so you don’t have to consider that. She then gathered materials from past DIY projects to complete the look.

This soothing shade of blue-green around the frame really invigorates
