“Are you going to Indian Wells?” That’s the question that circulates on tennis courts this time of year every year. And my answer is always yes. I used to go to the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden every March before billionaire Larry Ellison bought it in 2009 and turned the tournament and venue into a true Disneyland for tennis fans. Last year, about one and a half million people went to the desert. The tournament lasts for two weeks (March 4-17 this year) and feels as much like spring break as it is a sporting event for adults. There are champagne bars that glow neon pink at night, live bands, and pop-up shops with the latest court fashion. The best part, though, is being able to walk from court to court (nine) to watch the tennis gods kick their feet off my chair. Tab: About $1,400 for two nights, plus meals and tickets.

I want to go to the capital and book a room at the Renaissance Indian Wells Resort and Spa because most of the players stay there. For $450 a night, my husband and I were guaranteed to hit the tennis stars for breakfast or by the pool, with a sandy beach, mountain views, and a cocktail bar. The property also has free access to the tennis garden.

There are 20 places to eat on the grounds of the tennis court, but there are only two restaurants where you can wrestle with your friend. Nobo is in Stadium 2, but I prefer celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck’s Spago, which is only open to Stadium 1 ticket holders. The only thing better than watching Roger Federer swing on the court is watching Federer sway on the court while I eat black truffle pizza for dinner.

Unlike other pro sports where you need big bucks to get to the front row, anyone making $50 a day can sit on nearly 20 sunken practice pitches to listen to the players polish their shots. You can get Rafael Nadal (regular event) here. Last year I watched Novak Djokovic warm up when Mike Tyson came out to shake his hand.

A 1-box ticket package may cost thousands of dollars, but it doesn’t have to. A 60-day pass gives you access to 2-9, minor and major courts, a bonus, and access to the upper part of Stadium 1 (and access to Spago).

The tournament was sold out, especially during its first weekend, when fans wanted to see players compete in nine stadiums. As a result, March 8-10 can be a very difficult time to find accommodation in and around Indian Wells.

These hotels still had rooms available as of February 6, but probably wouldn’t stay longer. Even if the hotel’s website says it’s sold out, it’s a good idea to call to check room availability.

Miramont Indian Wells Resort & Spa at 45000 Indian Wells Lane was booked March 8-10 but had rooms with two queen beds on March 15-17 for $534 per night and an additional $35. It is about 2 km from the tennis garden.
