You may be tempted to spend more time and effort decorating the rooms that your guests will see, but neglecting your bedroom is a bad idea. After all, you spend almost a third of your life in the bedroom, so it is important that it is comfortable, calm and welcoming. An unfinished bedroom may seem sparse and transient, but just because you need to customize your space doesn’t mean you have to spend a small fortune on it.

Whether you already have bedroom must-haves and just need a little polish to complete the look, or you’re starting from scratch, we spoke to an expert designer to get tips on budget-friendly ways to decorate your bedroom.

Ways To Decorate With Fairy Lights

Stephanie Beverly is the Principal Interior Designer and Lead Artist at Twelve15 Design Studio based in Cincinnati, Ohio.

No, we’re not talking about Amazon (although we do love a good Prime deal). Search your home for items you no longer use and move them to the bedroom, suggests Beverly.

“Shop for your house,” he says. “Often people have style and decorative items in their home that can be used in the bedroom.” Sometimes that trendy lampshade that didn’t quite belong in the living room looks right next to your bed.

Dealing with a small bedroom? “Strategically add a mirror to make the room look bigger and allow you to see more elements,” says Beverly. By hanging a mirror behind your bed or above the sink, you can bring in extra natural light and fill in bare walls without spending a lot of money.

Find used mirrors at thrift stores and flea markets. An antique mirror is very easy to brighten up with a coat of paint and a little glass cleaner.

Buying fine art can be expensive, and you may not want to splurge on a hand-painted piece for your bedroom. Instead, Beverly suggests making a simple canvas painting yourself or printing wall art or a photo to fill the bare walls. The easiest way to make a bedroom feel sterile is to keep those walls completely bare.

“Talk to your bedding, from your mattress to your bed linens—it literally changes your life,” says Beverly. Even if you’re decorating a bedroom on a budget, try to shell out some cash for that comfy mattress or bedding set you’ve been eyeing.

It’s worth shelling out a few extra dollars for a good night’s sleep. If you can’t afford a full set, but still rarely use a top sheet, consider buying just a fancy sheet.

Small Bedroom Ideas To Maximise Space As Well As Style

Beverly suggests upgrading the windows if you want to give your bedroom a more polished look. “Opt for a window treatment that will provide great versatility, or offer dimming or light filtering,” he says. “It’s important to pay attention to the lighting in your space and how it affects the look and feel.”

It’s no secret that buying less costs less. If you’re on a budget, consider a minimalist look. Although it can feel sterile if you don’t get it right, sticking to a simple color palette and streamlined pieces can make your bedroom feel intentionally sparse.

“Lighting upgrades in the bedroom can make the space feel larger,” Beverly explains. “I love different levels of light, so consider lamps with different levels of light or a light on a dimmer switch.” Consider replacing your overhead light fixture to really transform your bedroom.

Your bedroom should have at least two or three sources of light. Calculate exactly how many lumens you need by multiplying 10-20 by the square footage of your room.

Changing your bedroom decor can be expensive every time a trend goes out of style. Instead, Beverly suggests making trendy pieces yourself and investing more in those pieces you know will last for years to come.

If you have no idea where to start, it can sometimes be more expensive to buy a lot of things that you don’t like quickly. If you are on a tight budget, you can afford a lot of design services.

“I think it’s also a great idea to reach out to a designer or decorator for advice on ideas for your bedroom,” says Beverly. “This small investment can save you time and money while inspiring and giving you direction.”

A fun way to keep your bedroom fresh and new is to change your bedding each season, says Beverly. Although this requires a small investment, it’s a great way to avoid getting bored with your space and make it feel like you’ve done a small renovation every season.

How To Style The Perfect Guest Bedroom

A great rug can cost several hundred dollars or more, but Beverly says it’s worth the splurge. Adding something soft under your feet can not only make your bedroom complete, but also significantly cozier on those cold winter mornings.

One place where clutter always accumulates is the bedroom. Place some inexpensive baskets around your room to catch problems and opt for furniture with built-in storage (like a nightstand with a drawer) to avoid bedroom clutter.

A planter is one of the cheapest ways to upgrade a bedroom. Not only does it add a pop of color to your space, but it also cleans the air (win-win!). Simply choose an easy-to-maintain plant so you’re not constantly replacing dead houseplants.

We love a good snake or philodendron in the bedroom because they are basically indestructible and add a lot of charm.

Small Bedroom Decorating Ideas On A Budget

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to revamp your bedroom, look no further. Paint your ceiling a color other than white for a fun change that can add more depth and interest to your space.

Filling a bare wall doesn’t have to be expensive. Hang dried eucalyptus on the wall for an easy and natural way to fill your walls and add a little color to your bedroom.

A dark, whimsical color can make a big impact. Transform an entire bedroom for just the price of a gallon of paint. Consider painting all four walls a rich dark shade, or painting just the accent wall for a pop of color.

There are plenty of ways to upgrade your bedroom without breaking the bank, as we’ve listed above. Simply rearranging your furniture, “shopping” your home to see what you already have, or DIYing an expensive piece you’ve had your eye on can help you spruce up your bedroom without breaking the bank.
