After spending hours putting together a killer workstation, you have a tricked-out laptop, multiple monitors, bangin’ speakers, and…a computer desk that’s too small to fit at all. Here’s how to build your own custom ergonomic computer desk that houses all your tech, looks awesome and won’t break the bank.

The number of ways to build a desk is endless. But for this particular project, I have four criteria that I need my desktop computer to meet.

After much research, I decided to build my desk from a door frame and adjustable desk legs from Ikea. It knocks all four goals out of the park, and as a bonus, you should be able to find parts easily, regardless of where you live. This is what I used.

Aesthetic Desk Ideas For Your Workspace

For such a large piece of furniture, you need a spacious table. And there are a few rocks that you can try.

The Ikea KARLBY countertop is popular for its size and affordability—it costs between $100 and $200, depending on size and color. Although you can use one in this guide, I wanted to go cheaper. So I got a big door for my coffee table.

The doors are very reasonably priced, with new ones selling for $50 to $100. If you search Craigslist, you may be able to find items for a better price, or pick something up for free if you’re lucky. A door will not be as smooth on the edges as the KARLBY, and may need some extra work to stain or paint, but I dig the more commercial look. Look for one that has a solid core (doesn’t leak) and that has a width that matches the depth of your desk — most doors range from 24 to 36 inches in diameter. . If you have a round face, you can always size down, but for a patient customer, it shouldn’t be necessary.

I chose a door that featured wood grain. Then I sanded, stained, and finished it myself. If you end up using a double door, you may have to deal with a hole where the handle used to be, although you can use it for wiring control later. In my case, I hid the hole under the mouse and keyboard mat.

Custom Home Office Ideas

This is the other half of the special sauce of this desk. You will need four or five support legs, and the total amount depends on whether you want to add a set of photos to your workspace.

While many people recommend standard legs or factory pipes, I chose Ikea’s OLOV legs. At $15 each, they’re a little more expensive than Ikea’s regular table legs, but they’re adjustable, meaning you can find the perfect height for you. This is important for good ergonomics, so the extra cost is worth it.

Again, search Craigslist to see if you can find cheap legs. I bought a used OLOV table from a neighbor. The total cost is $30—less than the $75 Ikea charges for five new legs.

No workspace is complete without a place to store your bikes, accessories, and other miscellaneous items. I recommend that you meet this requirement with a file cabinet or picture set that matches your maximum desk height (for guidance on how to determine that height, see the next section) so that you can using that of the legs. Because it depends on your size, this part will be very specific.

I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but Craigslist is your friend here—although Wayfair will also do if you don’t have a flea market in your area. I used a file cabinet that I already had in my house and one of these editors – keep it in the top drawer to hold all my stuff.

These are just the bones of our build, but you may want a few things to pull it all together. I highly recommend these two anti-sag stiffeners, which are important for large furniture that tends to sag under its own weight.

I bought an unfinished door and installed it myself, so I also needed to stain the wood with semi-gloss polyurethane.

Other items help keep your device organized. If you can’t adjust the height of your computer, you might want to install something like this super cheap DIY stand. To keep your workspace clean, I also recommend some kind of cable management, such as a rain channel or the Ikea SIGNUM shelf. Be sure to also install a mouse to avoid gas on black marks and coats.

Finally, you need two tools: a drill and a screwdriver (or a drive for your drill). You will need to attach everything to the wood with screws, but you will need a drill to make pilot holes, which will make it easier to put the pieces together. If you don’t have one, borrow one from a neighbor.

1. Prepare above. I started by sweeping, painting, and finished the door myself. This process is not very difficult, but the instructions are outside the scope of this article. If you haven’t done it before, then ask a friend for help, or check out these great YouTube guides from Steve Ramsey. It should only take a few hours of your time, plus a few days of waiting for everything to dry between coats.

Using the stain can be soothing, but make sure you’re working in a well-ventilated area—the fumes can be overwhelming. Whitson Gordon
