Build Your Own Garden Planters

Build Your Own Garden Planters – Instructions Conserve water and grow healthy leaves and flowers by using a self-watering planter. This beautiful cedar structure uses a drainage pipe to store and distribute water.

Who doesn’t love growing fresh salad greens, tomatoes and herbs? Unfortunately, growing vegetables in the summer requires daily watering, which can be difficult when you’re on vacation. In the past, we hired a neighbor’s son—sometimes he remembered, and sometimes we came home to eat wilted vegetables.

But it turns out there’s a better way to beat the heat and keep your plants in a self-watering plant that you can leave for a week without watering. When we commissioned our editors to create a DIY self-watering planter, the results were amazing. The self-watering boxes were cute, they kept rabbits and other critters from eating the leaves, and we went weeks without watering. We watered three times throughout the summer (no delay), and had fresh garden salads until winter. In this article, we will show you how to make your own self-watering planters. The secret of the water planters is in the perforated black pipe.

The total cost of this 3 x 6-ft. the price of cedar was $330. If you use treated wood, the cost can be reduced by about $250. And we used a black EPDM pool, which cost $120. (You can buy smaller versions at home parts for about $35. The rest of the equipment can be found in the yards of the house or in the garden / garden.) To give the box a good look, we ran the wood and sanded the face and cup. We left the cedar unfinished, but you can print your own. After building the starter box, we moved the planter to its final location and added self-watering water, soil and plants. Even without soil and plants, a DIY planter box is rich!

Self-watering planters are sometimes called “semi-irrigation planters” or SIPs, because your plants get to “drink” water whenever they need it. Our model uses an inexpensive decorative pipe with fabric sleeves under the insert. When you fill the reservoir, it allows air to flow and water to reach the roots of your plants whenever they need it. When plants are watered from the ground, the roots are always moist, there is less evaporation and you don’t need to water as much. Vinyl pipes allow flood water to drain away. There are many self-watering planters available – EarthBox is a good option, but you can easily make your own.

For a list of ingredients, a Cutting List, and Plant Options for containers, see the Appendix below. It is also important to note that we designed the floor to be compatible. You can also fit the bottom inside of the 2x2s as shown and allow the line to have a gap.

Remove the cross braces first and then the center braces. Add your boards to match the stands. For maximum strength, use 2 × 2 cross bars (33 in. planter height) at each end and 2x4s between the two joints.

These Simple Planter Boxes Are Easy To Build

Extend the vinyl drainage tubes outside. When you’re ready to plant, add loose soil mix to the top of the planter.

You will have to experiment to see how long your planter will stay wet. Fill the drains every time the soil dries out 2 or 3 in. When we install ours, we fill the pipes and give the plants an initial watering and wrap them around. After that, and even though it was a very hot summer, we only refilled the pipes three times this summer and had herbs and vegetables growing until the first frost!

In this video, Elisa Bernick, editor of Family Handyman, shows you how to build an irrigation system that will help you grow your favorite foods and water them, even when you’re on vacation.

I’ve been interested in growing vegetables in the garden, but, as I’m sure some of you can testify, there’s always another job that needs attention. I recently signed up for a great deal from the BBC and got free seeds, which has inspired me to grow my own bee – I don’t think the seed is still working, but you can check it out on the BBC. Our garden in England is very small and we didn’t have a lot of space to vary the leaves, so we needed a planter. I couldn’t find a big enough one for £60, so I got my older brother to help me make one.

What follows is the story of our magical journey to planter ownership… Read on and maybe one day you too can be a planter owner. Imagine that.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS: These instructions concern the use of electronic devices, so if you are a child, you must be accompanied by an adult. No one can regrow an amputated arm by eating lots of vegetables…

Diy Outdoor Planter From Scrap Wood

We managed to get most of our products at discount prices from Wickes – we bought scrap wood at half price and compost for £1.99 a bag. They were also covered with strong polythene, which we used for laying. Many garden centers or DIY shops will have stock damaged by unscrupulous forklift drivers who have been selling it cheap – check the back or ask someone else. It’s really worth it – our planter only cost $32 (not counting the tools and discounts we already had). This includes filling it with compost and, thanks to the BBC, the seeds we will plant.

Make a list of the parts you need to make a planter – then you will know what to buy and what to use from the shed.

TIP FROM MY DAD: Try and cut the ‘master’ piece, then use it as a template to cut the rest of the pieces. That way, even if it comes out a little, then all the pieces will still be the same. It is very important that it has its internal integrity rather than mathematical accuracy.

With a little effort in a few places you can make a planter look professional. Before assembling we beveled the edges of the long side pieces, this was done by placing the wall at a 45 degree angle and starting to cut 12mm from the edge (our steps were 30mm). You can see the results in the pictures.

TIPS FROM MY DAD: Work on the bottom of the legs to keep the wood from splitting. I did this and made it look like a tree that would kill a vampire! My father just looked at all six legs and they came out fine. I hate to admit it, but sometimes they are right.

Now you’ve cut your pieces, shaped the edges to make them look pretty and it’s all lying there ready to be built…

A. Prepare your pegs, then place the first corner and leg. Take the long side, the short side and the leg and put them together as shown in the picture (1). This is as upside down as it gets. Make a small cut under the leg and place the leg slightly below the planter so you don’t see it from the side. See figure 1.

B. Attach the parts together so that you can get two screws in both parts. See pictures 2 and 3.

C. Tie the corners of the decking to the legs. There should be a screw in each corner of the decorative wood. See figure 4 for approximate screw location.

D. Go to the next corner – do not forget to reduce the leg and cut-cut. See Figure 5.

F. Assemble all the side pieces – arrange them first to see how they should line up in relation to any curved pieces. See figure 7 for a close-up and figure 8 showing all the side pieces attached and the insert turned right side up.

G. Turn the planter upside down again – legs in the air. Measure the space between the corner legs on the long side, in our case this was 1240 mm. Half of this number is to measure and mark the bottom of the bottom piece on both sides. This is the center point where you want to attach the middle legs. Remember to minimize this by using the cutout and fasten it using six screws. See Figure 9 for a sketch of a planter with medium legs.
