Build Your Own Exposure Unit – Gavin Lyons shows how to make a Cyanotype photo using a UV LED box. Cyanotypes are usually developed in sunlight, but in winter UV light is less strong and less readily available. Here’s to making Cyanotype, Van Dyke Brown, or salt paper any time of the year.
The box uses UV LED light to print A3 or A4 size cyan type in just 5 minutes. This box is designed to be cheap and simple. The total amount must not exceed 70 euros.

I split the LED lights on both sides for optimal power distribution, with preference for brightness control – half power or full power.
Note: The box will heat up after 20 minutes and should be fine. I used it without a watch. However, turn the box off when not in use.
If you want to make a more robust version, I recommend putting everything on an aluminum plate. I may do this in the future. Everything works pretty well for now.

Expose the mark test page on the Cyanotype sensitive page for 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 minutes. Use a book to cover each section and slide at 1, 1, 2, 2, 2 minute intervals.
Then gently place the printed surface under running water. After 10 minutes, check the results. Stir the water with your hands from time to time. If no yellow remains on the paper, it is ready to hang to dry.

Since the advent of photography, many printing techniques have been exposed to UV light. Back then, the sun was the best source, and exposures were usually made outdoors. But the amount of UV rays from the sun varies in different seasons or different climates. Plus, baby, it’s cold outside now in the winter! For this reason, I decided to make a UV box.
I took inspiration from similar project videos on YouTube, but added my own personal touch. First, I used old wooden boxes for wine bottles instead of modern plastic boxes. I had a wooden box in my house and it was free, and the wood seems better and more compatible with the old techniques than the plastic. Second, I decided to count the seconds with an external timer and add the time to the exact exposure rather than manually turning the lights on and off.
The 5V line is supplied with 12V power by the stepper motor. This relay is supplied with 12V power to the LED strip and has a green LED in parallel.
As you can see, it’s easy to build. It just requires some electronics and programming skills and a lot of patience. Buying a full 6 bottle case and drinking it during the build may help morale, but I’m not sure of the results!

As promised, tonight I will post about how my dad put together the UV exposure unit that I will use for my historical photography this summer. I realize it’s a little past midnight EST now, but I can’t help that I’m still on PST…so it’s somewhere in the world today!
The concept and construction of the unit was relatively simple with knowledge of carpentry and electrical engineering. I say this as someone who is doing it, and I’m not. I could see and carry most things when I needed them. But I caught up with everything my dad did to me over the past few days to write this post.

To begin with, my father began assembling a simple wooden box. One side of the box is hinged and it serves as my paper door. The top of the box holds the UV light source. My dad had a few pieces of wood from an old cabinet on hand, so they became the bottom and top of the box. They measure approximately 20″x28″. The side boards are from Home Depot and are 1″x12″ #2 pine. Dad pre-drilled all the holes before turning the two sides. Later, he added a sealed cavity to reinforce the opening and prevent light from seeping through. Finally he sprayed the interior with silver and enamel white before wiring. .
After letting the spray paint dry overnight, I took the pieces into the basement. There, my dad held four 24″ black fluorescent bulbs clamped onto two ballasts.
I had done a lot of research online and in various articles about UV lamps. This resource by Sandy King provides the best information on the different lighting sources you can choose from. I choose BLB bulbs because they fit the type of ballast we buy at Home Depot and they are cheaper than BL bulbs.
My dad worked on the wiring and added a switch to turn on the power, while connecting an extension cord and plugging it into my darkroom.

Finally, I put a contact press frame on the bottom of the box, screwing up two loops to attach the side door that my dad slides forward.
