Aftermarket Quad Parts – If you don’t follow the motorcycle market, you may not realize how much of an impact adventure motorcycles have had on sales of new machines and aftermarket parts. Adventure bikes are big machines that can ride long distances and carry plenty of gear. That kind of sounds like the definition of a big-bore 4×4 quad, right? CFMoto agreed and saw the potential in creating an adventure/overland specific quad equipped to pack everything you need. Enter the CFMoto CForce 1000 Overland. The 1000cc 4×4 quad platform has been around in Europe for a couple of years, but it’s new to the US for 2021.

Visually, it is familiar as it shares a rolling chassis and powertrain architecture with the established CForce 800 XC. CFMoto uses a long-wheelbase two-up touring chassis for both the 800 and 1000. We can’t disagree with that choice. The 58-inch wheelbase poses few drawbacks for tight-going, but adds stability at speed and confidence for steep climbs or descents. CFMoto hadn’t disclosed the price at press time, but with standard quick-release rear luggage it should be the most expensive of the CFMoto quads. The 800 is $8599, so expect it to top that by a margin. By dividing the rear compartment into three separate sections, it’s easier to release and carry each case like a small suitcase instead of fighting with a giant storage box. Each of the lockable boxes has an aluminum plate on top to allow more equipment to be tied down.

Our Overland was comfortable while standing or sitting. It was easier to control in the forest while standing.

Atv First Test: 2021 Cfmoto Cforce 1000 Overland 4×4

Motivation is not a problem. The CForce 1000 Overland has a 79-horsepower, 963cc V-twin engine that’s smooth enough to control, but with plenty of lift to be exciting. The CForce quads use a CVTech CVT, and performance and engagement were faultless during our time with the machine.

Unique to the Overland model are three quick-mount travel bags on hard sides. All load from the top, and they should provide room for ample weather-protected equipment storage for off-road excursions. Since this is the same machine as a CForce two-up model, you can buy the rear seat and quickly swap out the storage bags to take a passenger with you. In addition to the storage bags, there are front and rear storage options built into the stock bodywork.

Like all CFMoto quads, the Overland is fully equipped, including a 3,000-pound winch with a handlebar-mounted control switch. We messed around with the winch by pulling some downed trees and it worked fine. All the larger CForce four-wheelers have speed-sensitive electronic power steering with variable assistance, so the top-of-the-line 1000 does too.

As an Overland model, the 1000 comes stock with an integrated large windshield and effective hand guards to protect the rider from cold and wet conditions. We have to say the windshield was welcome and looks like it belongs on a machine like this.

In a straight line, the long wheelbase is handy when descending or climbing. It provides a stable platform on the trail.

We’re used to getting excited when we see five-position adjustable preload collars on 4×4 quad shocks. Instead, the Overland comes with trailing arm rear and A-arm front suspension with fully adjustable YIT piggyback reservoir shocks. Shock adjustments of compression, rebound and via the threaded preload adjustments are easy to feel and they make a difference.

The three large rear boxes are unique to the Overland model. They have metal brackets on top to secure more cargo.

This multifunction display mounted on the handlebar has a wide variety of information on print. It is easy to read in sunlight.

CFMoto uses automotive paint on the slim body panels, so they provide good protection front and rear in the form of heavy-duty steel bumpers reinforced with plastic armour. On the sides, almost the entire length of the machine has an unpainted flare that easily protects the painted body parts.

Although there is no rear seat as standard equipment, the two-level floorboards have two high-tensile, serrated metal footpegs set into the floorboard surface. Obviously, the rear set is very useful if you add the optional passenger seat. The passenger seat has a supportive backrest and handle loops on both sides.

The underside is even better covered with an aluminum front plate and full-length heavy plastic plates. CV boots are probably the most delicate part of the underside of a 4×4 quad. The fronts are protected, hiding between the A-arms and the plastic armour. Unlike many 4×4 quads, the rear suspension is a trailing arm. The trailing arm ends extend back enough to provide a steel shield between the track scrap and the outer CV boots. Drilled aluminum CV guards surround the entire inboard CV boots. The rear frame tubes extend back to a protective deck that doubles as a 2-inch trailer hitch. Just insert a 2-inch pull rod. A threaded boss on the top of the mount allows you to attach a bolt to prevent the tie rod from rattling.

Some form of protection is provided with 14-inch cast aluminum beadlock rims and heavy-duty CST Clincher tires. They are 6 ply rated so they are rugged by ATV standards. Traction and wear are also very good.

An easy-to-read, multi-function digital gauge is mounted on the handlebars, although it’s not part of a lightweight pod. It has a number of functions and is easy to read in daylight. Unlike many 4×4 quads, the CForce 1000 has conventional motorcycle-style braking with a joystick on the right controlling the front brakes and a foot pedal on the right controlling the rear brakes. A gated shifter is on the left side. It has a key lock for security to prevent the device from shifting.

The CForce 1000 Overland has a steel frame with a composite coating to provide a nice loading surface and many attachment points. For nighttime, the CForce has what CFMoto calls Ridevision, which is a high-intensity LED front light, as well as dual LED rear lights and various reflectors. A compact plastic panel in the body above the left floorboard pops off without tools, revealing the engine and transmission fill port/dipsticks, plus the oil filter.

We found our almost glowing metallic silver 1000 quite interesting. We removed the prototype behind the covers for riding. A touring seat clip right on.

Unfortunately, our test was for a single day with no night driving, carrying passengers or towing. Like many CVT 4×4 quads, and especially those with two-cylinder engines, the Overland is wide between the feet and knees, but you get used to it easily. It is more at home with the rider seated, but allows standing if you want to ride more aggressively. The seat is supportive and comfortable.

The amount of suspension travel is modest, but the ride is comfortable. We removed the prototype storage boxes for our ride and replaced them with the optional rear seat. The passenger accommodation is also nice. Claimed horsepower has been reduced by approx. 10 ponies from the most aggressive Sport 1000 4×4, but this engine is a big part of the package. It should be up to any task. This motor/trans package is tough enough to power CFMoto UTVs!

We generally agree with the feel and sound of a big V-twin, and this one is no exception. The accessible riding area had many turns, and many climbing or falling at the same time. The CFMoto V-twin is responsive and muscular, yet easy to control. We found that we could stand and steer with the throttle. Despite a total wet weight of nearly 1,000 pounds, it builds speed quickly. We drove it pretty hard and we never had any signs of the drive belt getting hot. We hit the gas and the acceleration is satisfying instantly.

Engine braking is more than adequate and it’s not intrusive like some brands are. We can’t see where other than the most aggressive riders would want more power. We never felt that it was missing. We were not at all surprised that it was a lot of fun to ride. The engine seems to have the ideal amount of power. It can handle anything you throw at it without requiring much throttle control.

The front of the Overland is well protected. The winch works very well and the YIT dampers are fully adjustable.

Despite a test loop that was twisty and constantly turning, we weren’t bothered by the long wheelbase at all. We know from experience with other two-up platforms that we like the long machine for rock and ledges. The same applies to steep inclines. It doesn’t want to lift the front wheels.

We suspect the Overland won’t be looking for long whoop sections, but few 4×4 quads are, and especially not 1000cc twins. For overlanding, camping or adventure, it has ample suspension and good ride comfort. With a combined rack capacity of 175 pounds, you should be able to carry everything you need for comfort.
