For the fifteenth year in a row, MLK Community Committee Dr. Remember the king with the weekend event. The series kicked off Thursday night with a free civic engagement fair held at Woonsocket High School. On Friday, guests can attend the James W. Hinson Scholarship Dinner at Savini Restaurant to support the scholarship fund. New York Congressman and keynote speaker Michael Blake will be in attendance. An interfaith service will be held at St. James Baptist on Sunday afternoons for those looking for a little comfort. The series concludes on MLK Day with a memorial service at the MLK Memorial Sculpture Garden. All but the scholarship banquet is free and open to the public.

The Rhode Island School of Design will host a Martin Luther King Jr. themed event. In honor of Dr. Celebrate King and keep the community thinking about his message long after the holidays are over.

On Saturday, January 16, RISD will host its annual MLK Dinner at the Portfolio Cafe in the Mandle Building on Westminster Street. It is a community dinner prepared by RISD dining and catering chefs for local and RISD community. The hope is to attract people of all ages and genders to come eat and chat while fostering a sense of community. Immediately following the festival, join the Prism of Praise Community Choir in a raised celebration concert at RISD’s library. RISD will partner with the Learning Center Mt. Hope for Arts, Crafts and Service Day at MLK Elementary School in Providence. Visitors can bring their children (ages 3 to 12) to MLK Elementary School for a day of art and design activities, as well as a performance by Mt. Hope and RISD. Activities for the day include face painting, sketchbook and jewelry making. Other areas will teach children about the life and teachings of Dr. Enlighten the king. Volunteers from the RISD community and other non-profit partners will lead the day’s celebration and participate in children’s activities.
