Amazon is the world’s largest corporate buyer of renewable energy and today we are announcing our first renewable energy project in Singapore, a 62 megawatt (MW) solar project consisting of an array of solar panels installed on ground systems. The advantage of ground-based solar is the ability to better position the system to capture sunlight as weather conditions change. When completed in 2022, the project will be one of the largest integrated mobile solar power systems designed and installed in Singapore and will add clean renewable energy to the national electricity grid. Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore) is building an offshore system that will integrate multiple renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, tidal, diesel and electric gas technologies.
The region’s first large-scale offshore network system, it will have four hybrid microgrids covering an area of more than 64,000 square meters, or about the size of eight football fields. “I am delighted that the first micro-grid has just been commissioned and will enable the National Environment Agency (NEA) to operate its infrastructure at the Semakau Landfill using zero carbon electricity. Once all four hybrid microgrids are fully constructed, they are expected to produce steady and stable electricity in the megawatt (MW) range, suitable for small islands, isolated villages and emergency power sources.
It also produces energy equivalent to the average energy consumption of 250 4-room HDB flats per year. The fish farm and hatchery located at the Semakau Landfill will be the first to be powered.
