Over the past year, Chris Dissinger has worked as a consultant for Renew Wisconsin to collect all of these corporate commitments to renewable energy and take a deep dive into which of these national and multinational companies are operating in Wisconsin.

A timely example of Wisconsin’s renewable energy commitments is Ashley Furniture, based in Arcadia, Wisconsin. On Wednesday, Ashley announced a $29 million investment in renewable energy. The investment will be used to offset 35% of their energy consumption by installing solar panels at 10 of their largest facilities. Ash expects to save at least $5 million in the first year.
Wisconsin’s energy companies have begun creating programs to help companies like these and other large customers meet their renewable energy goals.
Two years ago, Madison Gas & Electric launched a special “renewable energy rider” service for its commercial customers, and just last month they announced that they had expressed interest from the first two customers.
Last fall, We Energies followed that up by getting a proposal and approval for a similar program that would allow its larger customers to sign up for access to dedicated renewable energy sources. Ne Energies was approved for their program in December 2018.
And a few weeks ago, Alliant Energy joined in again and offered a similar plan. Alliant’s plan still needs approval from the Public Service Commission, which oversees and regulates utilities in Wisconsin.

Norwegian Crystals is a Norwegian start-up that produces low-carbon monocrystalline silicon rods for high-performance photovoltaic devices. To produce these rods, the start-up melts high-purity silicon at high temperatures using the Chokralsky technique. It also produces gallium-doped rods that increase the lifetime of solar cells and reduce the number of stabilization steps compared to monocrystalline silicon.
