Renewable Energy Credits Pennsylvania – Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) are energy credits you earn every time your grid-connected solar panel system produces 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of solar energy. 1 SREC corresponds to 1 MWh. Owners of solar panel systems can sell SRECs back to utility companies. This means you can literally make money from the solar energy you produce with a grid-tied solar panel system!
A typical 9 kilowatt solar panel system (9K system) produces 10 megawatt hours (MWh) or 10 SREC per year. Over the 20 or 25 year life of an average solar panel system, you can sell between 200 and 250 renewable solar credits back to your utility company.
Utilities in PA are required by law to generate a certain percentage of their power from renewable sources such as solar power; One way to comply with this law is to purchase SRECs from homeowners.
In mid-2020, Pennsylvania’s SRECs were valued at more than $30 per credit, and in 2021 they were still at $33 per credit, according to this article from Energy Sage. On October 30, 2017, Governor Tom Wolf signed into law a bill that will have a positive impact on solar energy throughout Pennsylvania. Homeowners throughout Pennsylvania now have the opportunity to earn additional income through the sale of SRECs for connected solar systems.
Now, thanks to this recently passed law, PA utilities are only allowed to purchase SRECs from PA sources. This will provide a huge boost to Pennsylvania’s already vibrant solar industry. “Solar energy is no longer a niche industry, it is a solid addition to our diverse energy portfolio,” said state Sen. Mario Scavello, the bill’s sponsor ( source ).
If your grid-connected solar panel system produces 10 MWh (equivalent to 10 SRECs) per year, you will earn $6,000 over 20 years at an SREC rate of $30 per credit. Now, assuming your solar panel system lasts 25 years, your earnings from renewable solar will increase to $7,500! If the SREC rate increases over the 20 years, you will earn more, which is likely.
