PGE closed a coal-fired plant in Boardman last year and plans to cut ties with the Coalstrip coal-fired power plant in Montana. It still has a few natural gas plants that it will use less and switch to renewables or cleaner alternatives in the future.

Dave Robertson, PGE’s vice president of public affairs, said that going forward, as the utility transitions to 100% clean electricity, everything in the utility system will have to work better to avoid blackouts and price increases.
“We’re very excited about it,” he said. “We know climate compliance is necessary, and the only way to do it is to do things differently.”
The company also applied to the Oregon Public Utilities Commission for a one-year extension of the Integrated Resource Plan, a mandatory two-year plan for how a utility plans to meet its obligations to its customers.
Sims said the extra time will allow the company to gather more input from the public about its vision for the future. The company plans to unveil that plan in March for approval in 2023.
