National Renewable Energy Laboratory Staff Directory – From July 31 to August 1, 2017, Renewable Cities traveled to Denver, Colorado, where we held a conversation with cities leading the transition to 100% renewable energy. Better learn what’s possible at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), a center for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development.

NREL’s facilities are simply breathtaking, and our tour was only a fraction of the campus. Home to the largest zero-emission building in North America, maximizing comfort and access to the world’s consciousness are the principles that determined the lifestyle and layout.

Dynamic simulations are performed on physical and virtual models in the Energy System Integration Facility (ESIF). At the time of our visit, a full-scale housing unit was undergoing preconstruction testing prior to commissioning as a community center in Golden, CO. Virtual models of all electrical systems are created in the Insight Center and can be accessed by designers. give two virtual reality engines to walk (closer) on their data. Being able to see and interact with their data predictably helped designers understand patterns and parts of the system that needed to be fixed soon. Also, in the words of our tour guide, “It helps different technologies to speak the same language.”

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, And Accessibility

After a tour of the facilities, we sat down with experts from NREL and partner organizations to discuss the current priorities evolving in the new renewable energy environment.

After learning that cities can be powered by using 100% renewable energy, attendees will hear what motivates local government decisions to stick with cities’ goals and benefits. Neil McAndrews spoke about Georgetown, TX, a predominantly Republican city that has committed to 100% renewable energy because wind and solar do not require water to generate electricity, and water is scarce in Georgetown. As a benefit, McAndrews also said renewable energy has the potential to attract businesses to the city. All council members agreed that it is important to continue to participate in legislation and policy formulation at the state level — to present at meetings — and to work with stakeholders and the community, but “for the first time in history, the economy is on our side.”

From a panel discussion – and a presentation by Councilman Larry Atencio, Pueblo, OC – attendees were reminded that health, affordability and accessibility must be at the heart of all decisions related to the transition to renewable energy. : “No one should have to choose between putting food on the table, keeping the lights on, and accessing health care.”

Madeline Stano, a legal advisor at the Greenlining Institute, spoke about the health effects she experienced growing up in a coal town and her mission to ensure low-income people and people of color benefit from switching away from fossil fuels.

John Phelan described the ways in which the City of Fort Collins invests in its equity programs. For example, the utility offers financial assistance for solar installations, based on need, and connects consumers with local resources to improve their home’s energy efficiency.

Jacqui Patterson leads the Environmental and Climate Policy Program at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and shares shocking statistics about the enormous burden of stress that African Americans bear due to visible pollution and structural barriers to accessing the benefits of energy production—all energy, not just fossil fuels. He pointed to effective examples, some of which are listed below:

We wanted ten parallel workshops, but only two. The first was a workshop led by Kimiko Narita, Deputy Director, City Energy Project of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). NRDC runs a construction program designed to help 20 US cities renovate their building stock. These case studies are available online.

The other is Bryn Baker, Director of Renewable Energy at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance (REBA), a program that helps companies consolidate their energy purchases. Together with its partner, the World Resources Institute, WWF seeks to understand how best to help cities join the network and integrate local government energy procurement decisions into the platform.

The event ended with the participants leading the discussion. Through pre-discussion surveys and field questions as they emerged from the session, the small groups came together on hot button issues that required more in-depth work. The most popular comments are planning and accuracy, although the efficiency of building construction showed a healthy trend, which is different from the first report in 2016.
