This year, for the Handbuilt Holiday series, Ana White and I focused a little more on hostess style gift ideas or gifts for adults. Having done a lot of parenting projects in the past, we decided to add some adult themed gift ideas.
I just love how the modern shape filled with colorful gifts adds life and texture to my dining room table. You can place this lazy susan on any flat surface and it will work well.
You can see in the picture above that there is a lot of space between the top of the table and the underside of the slot machine. There is almost a 3/4″ gap between the top of the table and the bottom edge of the susan chair so it can move freely.

Following Ana’s plan, here, attach the lower brackets to the upper planks using wood glue and a 1 1/4 inch countersunk screw. Then cut the decorative pieces and attach. I chose to show 1/2 on top.
The only necessary hardware you will need for this project is the lazy susan kit. I used a 12 inch lazy susan turntable from Amazon here. Given the size of this new octagon, I chose a larger 12-inch turntable. You can use a standard 6-inch turntable and it’s fine but I feel the wider base provides more stability.
To complete this modern tray, I filled the buttons and gaps with clear CA glue and then sprayed it with a quick drying accelerator. Then sand everything to a smooth finish, stain with early American Varathane and seal with two coats of clear polyurethane satin. Also, make sure to attach the adhesive felt pads to the turntable hardware so it doesn’t scratch the board.

Although this thing is 28″ in diameter, if it weren’t for the wood grain, I doubt you’d ever find the knee beam that Charles used for the record- turn to create this. on a base just as attractive so smooth that you don’t need an extra piece of sticky felt to protect your table from scratches Even on glass, expensive wood … whatever the table- of food you have… This Lazy Susan will NOT scratch your table top if the upper surface preparation impresses you in the picture, the lower part is also impressive.

This is just a beautiful piece of work and really shows the craftsmanship of a professional woodworker. It took a while to arrive and I thought maybe too small for my 60″ dining table but the lead time was clearly marked and I had the measurements. Thank you for your inquiry! I received many emails asking if I would still open and hesitated on Susan the turntable. The answer is yes! I live on the 10-acre lot, which includes my house, lazy Susan’s wood shop, paint shop, finishing shop, and mail/boxing/shipping buildings. There is a fence and a mile long driveway. The only guests we had were the post office, the garbage man, the post office and FedEx, who all had their front pickup locations outside the fence.
