Avocados contain enzymes that turn brown when exposed to air, he explained, and placing the avocado slices in these containers in the refrigerator reduces the amount of air that oxidizes them. “You can get a day or two off what’s normal in a matter of hours,” he said.

Amy Shapiro, director of Real Nutrition in New York City, encourages her clients to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. He recommends BluApple Freshness Balls to preserve the product and help it last longer.

While Claudia Sidoti, chef and recipe developer at food delivery service HelloFresh, says she often uses traditional tips like wet paper towels to wrap herbs, she also likes these reusable lunch bags for storage items in the refrigerator.

“Resealable bags are a friendly and efficient alternative to Ziplocs for storing snacks, sandwiches, cut fruits and vegetables,” says Sidoti. “It also doesn’t leak, which helps reduce cleanup.”

“To keep flowers fresh, I recommend buying canned vegetables,” says Kevin Templeton, head baker of Barleymash in San Diego, California. “This 50-year-old man kept foods like asparagus, celery, dill, parsley, etc. fresh for two weeks”.

Do Special Food Saving Containers Really Keep Produce Fresh Longer?

The Novart herb holder, Templeton’s top pick, is Amazon’s largest at 11 inches tall and fits in most refrigerator drawers.

“My new go-to for keeping food fresh is using a vacuum sealer,” says Templeton. But he ordered to ensure that all ingredients are washed and proteins are handled properly. “There are some bacteria that live in low-oxygen environments,” he said.

“It’s microwave, oven, freezer, stovetop, and dishwasher safe—and even airtight,” says Mary Weidner, co-founder of meal planning program Strongr Fastr. “I use it to hold chopped vegetables to eat like a cigarette at the end of the week and to store my sandwiches for lunch. I have a bag in the fridge that holds all my fruits and veggies for smoothies so I can just take the bag out and throw it in the blender.

Fortunately, there are some simple, tried-and-true tips to keep foods fresh longer, from bananas to flour.

Keep Food Fresher Longer

Place some paper towels in the refrigerator to absorb the moisture produced by the vegetables as they cool. The paper will soak up the extra condensation that causes the vegetables to dry out.

To prevent bananas from peeling quickly, leave the bunch intact and wrap the stem in a piece of tin.

The idea is that wrapping the stem helps reduce the amount of ethylene gas released by bananas that speeds up ripening.

I’ve already said that tender greens, including parsley or basil, stay fresh for a long time if stored on the counter in glasses with about an inch of water (read the post about food storage containers). However, for green leafy vegetables such as sage, rosemary and thyme, it is best to wrap them in a damp paper towel and then store them in a freezer bag.

When your well-stored herbs start to wilt, cut them up and place them in an ice cube tray. Pour olive oil over the herbs and dry so that the olive oil cubes are readily available at all times. If the recipe calls for oil, you can heat the cubes in a hot pan.

New bulbs should be stored in a mesh or paper bag – not covered with plastic – and kept in a cool place out of sunlight. With plenty of air and a dark place, new bulbs should last for weeks without drying out.

Instead of slicing whole lemons if you just want a little juice, pierce the fruit with a skewer and squeeze out the juice. This will prevent the other lemons from drying out as quickly as if they were cut.

It may sound strange at first, but washing fresh raspberries, strawberries and other berries in a solution of one part vinegar and three parts water will help them stay fresh and tasty for several days beyond their normal life.

When you buy fresh flour, cover it in a bag and refrigerate it for a few days. This will kill any moths or insect eggs that may be in the flour.
