It’s a great item that’s beautiful, but handling feels daunting. If you have kids or lead a busy life, the idea of keeping your sofa lush and beautiful can be overwhelming. Surprisingly, velvet sofa maintenance is easier than I thought, especially when I have the right tools ready and waiting.
– Prepare the vacuum cleaner for a new task! Vacuuming your plush sofa weekly is best to prevent dirt build-up. Vacuuming a velvet sofa is not the same as vacuuming the floor. When vacuuming the floor, the back and forth movement is normal and natural. With a velvet sofa, single strokes moving in the same direction are best. This prevents the fabric from breaking and maintains its lush appearance.

– When it comes to spot treatment, accidents come to the fore by testing the cleaning solution on an inconspicuous part of the sofa. This way, you know how the product affects the material and you are prepared for what happens. If you want to be careful about what you put on the sofa, many furniture cleaning experts recommend lemon juice, baking soda, and water. Remember how terrifying the thought of a spill on the sofa was when the thought of buying a velvet sofa crossed your mind? Well not scary anymore! If a spill occurs, hurry! The sooner you get to it, the better. Why? If the liquid dries, it will damage the fabric. Grab an absorbent cloth and remove as much liquid as possible.

If a large spill or stain occurs on the couch, the best bet is to call in a professional, but I have no intention of making a big mess on this beautiful piece, and I know my staff will respect the couch, too. I love how this sofa looks and feels in my living room, and I’m definitely not worried about how to keep the color vibrant and the fabric feeling amazing!

Professional cleaning is recommended for larger or more prominent stains, but cotton and especially polyester velvet can be cleaned at home with care. Do not attempt to clean acetate, rayon or silk velvet. They are very delicate and easily damaged during cleaning. Some cleaning experts warn that cotton velvet fabric will bend during cleaning, so be careful and don’t wet the fabric more than necessary.
You can use furniture cleaners like Woolite to clean cotton or polyester velvet. Test the cleaner on an inconspicuous area, such as the back or underside of a sofa. Check that it does not stain or damage the material in any way. Carefully apply the furniture cleaner to the velvet with a soft sponge, so the pile of velvet is not disturbed. After it’s clean, be sure to vacuum and brush the velvet several times to keep the velvet looking good. Note: Woolite also has a foam product with an integrated brush designed for cleaning furniture, which is useful.

If liquid is spilled on the velvet, soak it up with a paper towel or cloth. Make sure there is no food or debris left on the cloth. Add a small amount of washing up liquid and water in a bucket, mixing until foamy. Soak a cloth in suds and gently apply it to the stain. Use a foam cloth to dry the stain until it disappears. It is important that the velvet fabric dries quickly. Use a hair dryer or fan to speed up the drying process.
If the cloth is wet, use a paper towel or soft cloth to absorb the liquid. Apply the cleaner to the sponge and wipe the stain repeatedly. Allow the cleaner to dry completely on a cloth, using a hair dryer or fan to dry it as quickly as possible. If the velvet looks dull, use a soft brush to dull it.
