How To Build Your Own Patio Cover

How To Build Your Own Patio Cover – This step by step woodworking project on how to build a patio cover is free DIY plans. I had a lot of fun designing this covered patio structure because if you’re like me, you appreciate shade on hot summer days. This structure is designed for heavy duty use and has a 5 degree roof slope, but please observe building codes and hire a professional contractor if you do not have the necessary skills to carry out the project yourself.

We encourage you to invest in the best materials you can afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pressure-treated lumber, cedar, or redwood. If you are using regular pine, I recommend that you apply appropriate products to increase its durability. Always take accurate measurements before resizing components to the correct size. Drill pilot holes in the components before inserting screws to prevent splitting of the wood. See all of my Premium Plans HERE.

How To Build Your Own Patio Cover

The first step of the project is the layout of the patio cover posts. Therefore, carefully choose a place and level the surface. Make sure you remove the vegetation layer and level the surface. Use dough boards and string to mark the location of the legs. Apply the 3′-4′-5′ rule to each corner to make sure they are square. Measure the diagonals and adjust them so that they are equal.

Best Patio Cover Ideas

You should know that this patio flooring plan is just an example so you can understand the techniques needed to get the job done. However, you can customize the design size to suit your needs. You can change the height of the pillars, the angle of the roof and the size of the base.

After marking the location of the posts, you need to dig holes in the ground 3 feet deep using a post hole digger. Install the pipe molds and place the racks in place, making sure they are perfectly plumb. Fill the forms with concrete and install the anchors. Use strings and boards to align the anchors.

Please check local codes to determine the CORRECT foundation depth. In addition, in some places, concrete pillars may be required. This is why it is important to read local codes because the depth of the front line depends on your location.

Use temporary spacers to attach the 6×6 posts to the anchors. Weigh the posts with a spirit level. Use a chalk line to make the top of the posts so they are perfectly flush with each other. Use a circular saw to cut off the top of the posts.

Things To Keep In Mind When Planning A Patio Build

Use lumber 6×8 for the support beams. Make 45 degree cuts at one end of the beams to make it look more decorative. You can also get creative and make round cutouts.

Attach the beams to the top of the uprights and hang them vertically. Use the stud-to-beam connectors to secure them tightly together.

Use lumber 6×6 for the spacers. Using a miter saw, make 45 degree cuts to both ends of the staples. Before attaching the spacers, check that the uprights are vertical and the top beams are perfectly horizontal. Drill pilot holes and insert 5″ screws to secure the brackets to the frame.

Then attach the 2×8 boards to the house. The crossbar is placed in the house, taking into account the roof slope of 5 degrees. If you want to change this, just place the book above. It is important to check local regulations before attaching ledger boards. In this example, I think it’s okay to use 5″ bolts, but that probably doesn’t apply to your codes. The codes also show the required number of bolts and the distance between them.

Next, we will build the rafters to cover the patio using 2×8. As you can see in the diagram, use a miter saw to make a 5 degree cut at one end of the rafters.

Mark cut lines to opposite ends. Use a jigsaw for curved cuts and a circular saw for bird mouth cuts. Smooth out the edges with sandpaper.

Attach the rafters to the top of the patio cover structure. Use the information on the diagram to place the rafters every 16 inches in the center. The number you see on the plan is the distance between the rafters. Use rafter hangers to secure the rafters to the joists. Use rafter ties to attach the rafters to the support beam. I recommend that you use 1 1/2″ structural screws to secure the ties in place.

Use 1/2″ plywood for the roof sheets. Make cuts in the sheets and lay them over the roof structure. Do not leave gaps between the sheets and carefully align everything. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws every 8″ along the frame.

Use 1×2 lumber for the front and back roof trim. Cut at a 5 degree angle to one end of the plank. Attach the planks to the rafters and insert 2-inch nails to secure them tightly in place.

Note that you need to add sheathing between the house wall and the patio cover roof. Also, seal the seams to prevent water intrusion.

You can install bituminous shingles to protect your roof as this is a straight forward solution. Therefore, install the felt over the roofing sheets, making sure the strips overlap by at least 2″. Attach the roofing felt to the plywood sheets with roof braces. Before laying the bituminous shingles, lay the initial layer at the bottom of the roof. Always read the manufacturer’s instructions before starting installation, as there are several differences.

The first row should start with 3 tabs, the second row – 2 1/2 tabs, the third row – 2 tabs, the fourth row – 1 1/2 tabs, the fifth row – 1 tab, the sixth course of 1/2 tab. Repeat the process from the beginning, starting from the seventh course. Remember that the shingles should protrude about 1/4″ above the drip. Also, secure the shingles to the roof decking with nails.

New Backyard Patio Cover Adds Protection And Charm

You should love the simplicity of patio cover. It is very easy to build and you will love the shade on hot summer days.

This patio cover is built on a solid 6×6 construction. You can adjust the slope of the roof according to your needs.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the holes with wood putty, and then clean the surface with sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain to the components to improve the look of the shed and protect the components from rotting.
