How Solar Energy Panels Work

How Solar Energy Panels Work – Solar energy starts from the sun. Solar panels (also known as “photovoltaic panels”) are used to convert sunlight, which contains energetic particles called “photons”, into electricity that can be used to power electrical loads.

Solar panels can be used for a wide range of applications, including remote cabin power systems, telecommunications equipment, remote sensing, and of course for generating electricity through residential and commercial solar systems.

How Solar Energy Panels Work

On this page we will discuss the history, technology and benefits of solar panels. We will learn how solar panels work, how they are manufactured, how they produce electricity and where they can be bought.

How Solar Power And The Grid Work Together

The development of solar energy goes back more than 100 years. In the early days, solar energy was mainly used to generate steam which could then be used to power machinery. But it wasn’t until Edmond Becquerel discovered the “photovoltaic effect” that would make it possible to convert solar electricity from sunlight. Becquerel’s discovery then led to the invention of the first true solar cell in 1893 by Charles Fritts, which was made by coating selenium layers with a thin layer of gold. And from this humble beginning, the invention we know today

Russel Ohl, an American inventor on the payroll of Bell Laboratories, patented the world’s first silicon solar cell in 1941. Ohl’s invention led to the production of the first solar panel in 1954 by the same company. Solar panels found their first regular use in space satellites. For most people, the first solar panel in their life was probably built into their new calculator, around the 1970s.

Today, solar panels and complete solar panel systems are used to power a wide range of applications. Yes, solar panels in the form of solar cells are still used in calculators. However, they are also used to supply solar power to entire homes and office buildings, such as Google’s headquarters in California.

Solar panels collect clean renewable energy in the form of sunlight and convert that light into electricity which can then be used to power electrical loads. Solar panels consist of a number of individual solar cells containing layers of silicon, phosphorous (which gives a negative charge) and boron (which gives a positive charge). Solar panels absorb photons and generate electricity in the process. The energy derived from photons striking the surface of the solar panel allows electrons to be ejected from their atomic orbits and released into the electric field created by the solar cells, which then draw these free electrons into a directional current. This whole process is called the photovoltaic effect. The average home has more than enough roof space for the required number of solar panels to generate enough solar electricity to meet all your energy needs. The excess electricity produced goes into the main electricity grid, paying for the electricity use every night.

How Solar Energy Works

In a balanced grid connected configuration, the solar array produces energy during the day which is then used in the home at night. Net metering programs allow owners of solar generators to be billed if their system produces more energy than is needed at home. In off-grid solar applications, the required components are a battery, a charge controller and, in most cases, an inverter. The solar array sends direct current (DC) through a charge controller to the battery. Power is then transferred from the battery to an inverter, which converts direct current into alternating current (AC) that can be used for non-DC devices. With the help of inverters, arrays of solar panels can be sized to meet the most demanding electrical load requirements. AC power can be used to power loads in homes or commercial buildings, RVs and boats, remote cabins, cottages or homes, remote traffic controls, telecommunications equipment, oil and gas flow monitoring, RTUs, SCADA and more

Using solar panels is a very practical way of generating electricity for many applications. Obviously it would have to be life off the grid. Living off the grid means living in a place that is not supplied by the main electricity grid. Remote homes and cabins benefit greatly from solar energy systems. It is no longer necessary to pay large fees for installing electricity poles and wires from the nearest access point to the main grid. A solar electric system could be less expensive and can provide electricity for more than three decades if properly maintained.

Apart from solar panels enabling off-grid living, perhaps the biggest advantage of using solar energy is that it is a clean, renewable energy source. With the onset of global climate change, it has become more important that we do everything we can to reduce the pressure on our atmosphere due to greenhouse gas emissions. Solar panels have no moving parts and require little maintenance. They are solidly built and last for decades when properly maintained.

Last but not least the benefits of solar panels and solar power is that once the system pays for its initial installation costs, it produces electricity for the rest of the system’s life, which can be up to 15-20. years depending on the quality of the system, it’s completely free! For owners of grid-connected solar systems, the benefits start the moment the system goes online, potentially eliminating monthly electricity bills or, the best part, actually earning additional revenue for the system owner to the utility company. How? If you use less energy than your solar electric system produces, that excess energy can be sold, sometimes at a premium, to your utility.

Will Solar Panels Work Where You Live? That Depends — Green And Prosperous

There are many other applications and benefits of using solar panels to generate your electricity needs, too many to list here. But as you browse our website, you will gain a good general knowledge of how versatile and practical solar energy can be.

The prices of solar panels have fallen significantly in the last two years. This is great because, along with the $30 federal solar investment tax credit and other qualifying incentives, NOW is the best time to invest in a solar energy system. And consider this: A solar system costs about the same as an average-sized car.

Our solar panel brands include the most respected manufacturers in the solar panel business. These brands include names such as BP Solar, General Electric and Sharp, among others. We only offer the highest quality solar panels from manufacturers with proven experience in solar panel technology. With more than 30 years in the solar panel business, you can be sure that we know solar panels here! Solar panels are becoming more common, but few know exactly how they work. How Do Solar Panels Work?

But if you’re the curious type wondering, “How do solar panels work?”, read on as we unravel some of the mysteries surrounding solar power in this blog.

First, let’s look at the sun. It’s a huge nuclear reactor 93 million kilometers away that emits energy in all directions in the form of tiny packets called photons.

Enough of those photons reach the Earth’s surface every hour to generate more electricity than we use globally for an entire year.

The trick is to use that energy in a useful way, which is exactly what solar panels do.

Solar Panels That Work At Night Produce Enough Power To Charge A Phone

A solar panel is an assembly of many photovoltaic (PV) cells that are covered with protective glass and held together by a metal frame. That is why the official name of the solar panel is “photovoltaic module”. These photovoltaic solar cells are made of a semiconductor material, usually silicon, that has been cut ultra-thin.

Solar panels have many layers. The photovoltaic cell layer is where electricity is produced. Other layers, such as glass and encapsulation layers, are there to protect the photovoltaic cells so that the modules can produce electricity properly. Image source: Aurinka Photovoltaic Group

All photovoltaic cells have a negative and a positive layer. The negative shell has extra electrons, and the positive shell has room for those electrons. Electricity drives electrons, so a solar panel can produce electricity, we only need a little energy to release those electrons and thus go from the negative layer to the positive layer.

Sign the sun Photons from the sun that hit the surface of our planet during the day are the key to the answer to the question of how solar panels work.

A Glimpse Into How Solar Panels Work

The energy from those photons frees the electrons on the negative side of the PV cell and makes them move, which means we now have electricity. This is called the photovoltaic effect.
