Can transmission loss really be as low as 2%?
Early data from the dynamometer charts suggest that the Honda Civic Type R is very capable of transferring power from its engine to the wheels efficiently while minimizing transmission losses.
An image and accompanying short clip show the new hot hatch producing an impressive 295 horsepower (220 kilowatts) at the wheels. Compared to the factory claimed engine power of 306 horsepower. (228 kW) This corresponds to about 4% power loss in transmission. A separate chart shows an even more impressive figure, showing the Civic Type R delivering 301bhp to the wheels. (225 kW), only a loss of about 2%.
Honda Limited The Civic Si’s Horsepower In The Name Of Reliability
When automakers list a car’s horsepower, they usually use the number directly from the engine. However, some horses disappear on their way from the crankshaft to the road, in part due to friction in the gearbox and differential – this is transmission loss.
Transmission losses on two-wheelers are usually in excess of 10%. for example,
The Civic Type R features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 306 horsepower. (228 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. It goes through a six-speed manual transmission, then a limited-slip differential, and hits the road. Rumors have suggested that there could be more options in the future, including a milder larger version or an all-wheel-drive version as a more direct competitor to the Ford Focus RS, Volkswagen Golf R and Subaru WRX STI.
For now, we have to look at this pair of speakers as anecdotal evidence of the Civic Type R’s power efficiency, as these impressive numbers can be extraordinary.
