Educational institutions in the UAE need to address the lack of qualified resources and take steps to create a workforce that is well-informed about the potential and technologies of renewable energy. Our analysis shows that only 10% of universities in the UAE offer technical courses related to renewable energy.
Our educational institutions should introduce renewable energy education in schools from an early age. This is very important because renewable energy sources will be one of the main sources of energy in the coming years. Students need to understand how it works and how we can apply it to ourselves and others around us. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority has announced plans to open a renewable energy laboratory to study how to harness solar, wind and wave energy in a variety of power applications. The lab will study how this type of energy can be put to good use in Dubai. This is especially important as more and more companies use green strategies to reduce their impact on the environment. I recently had the opportunity to visit Masdar City, which is located in Abu Dhabi and home to many future projects. One project that really caught my attention was the Renewable Energy Testbed. This is an indication that the UAE has started investing in renewable energy projects to create a sustainable energy source. And we as leaders should help them by giving them the right things to move forward. Sustainability is about making better decisions for a better world. Making renewable energy a sustainable choice with one GIS solution helps sustainability.
What is renewable energy? Most energy sources rely on fossil fuels: coal, oil and natural gas. These are rare items that become obsolete over time, expensive to acquire or expensive to remove. In contrast, wind power, solar power, hydroelectric power, geothermal power, wave power and biomass are renewable sources.
Renewable energy sources vary greatly in terms of their cost, availability and environmental impact. Based on the goal of meeting 20 percent of the US’s electricity needs through wind power generation by 2030, NREL has updated wind maps using ArcGIS Desktop. NREL staff have developed wind instruments that estimate wind gusts of up to 200 meters across most of the United States. The map they created showed the best locations for wind farms based on the type and availability of wind equipment, as well as transmission and grid costs.
While this research could help wind power increase, renewable energy can be set at a lower rate than energy produced from fossil fuels. GIS has been used to estimate the energy efficiency of small areas such as single roofs.
The LA Solar Portal (lacounti.solarmap.org) is a website that allows the 10.5 million residents and business owners in Los Angeles, California to quickly and accurately estimate the energy production capacity of solar PV systems for each home. Launched in 2009, the ambitious project mapped more than 3,000 square miles and included the effects of shading from nearby trees, buildings and mountains, as well as using pitch and roof pitches to estimate the amount of sunlight falling every five feet. .
The article in this issue, “Site Locating for Photovoltaic Solar Panels,” describes a pilot study conducted in the area around the University of Arizona, Tucson, that used ModelBuilder to identify sites with good characteristics and eliminate sites that are not. appropriate.
The Vermont Renewable Energy Atlas makes extensive use of GIS to support and promote the use of renewable resources in commercial and private energy production. Since 2001, Cascade County, Montana has had an active program to promote the development of wind energy in one of Montana’s largest wind regions. The county’s GIS department created a wind map that includes wind speed, power plant locations, and package and road information to help developers assess the potential of power plants in the county. It also uses GIS to help developers search for available locations. The program led to the construction of the Horseshoe Bend Wind Park, the first commercial wind farm in the United States. It started producing power in 2006.
Whether analyzing potential, enabling better management or encouraging the use of renewable resources, GIS has an important role to play in mapping the planet’s sustainable future.

Wurman’s speech emphasized the importance of understanding because “understanding leads to action.”
