The report reveals a staggering gap between targets and actions with fifteen G20 countries lacking a 2020 renewable energy target covering all sectors. REN21 calls for all economic activities to have key performance indicators to close this gap.
The results of the report are truly global as they are collected from hundreds of contributors from industry, NGOs, governments and universities around the world. In addition, chapters went through two rounds of public peer review, leading hundreds of known contributors to the first page of the report. The robust process of GSR production means that the results are deeply relevant to the world. We have summarized some below.
1. The use of renewable energy is increasing, surpassing fossil fuels which have become the main source of energy for the world.
Between 2009 and 2019, renewable energy grew by about 5% per year, more than fossil fuels (1.7%). Renewable energy set another record for installed capacity in 2020, meaning we generated around 29% of our energy from renewables.
At the same time, the world is burning more fossil fuels than ever before. As you can see in the picture below, the share of fossil fuels in the total energy consumption is as high as it was ten years ago and the share of renewables has increased slightly.
The report notes that 2020 will see a wave of strong commitments to act on the climate crisis. These include the zero carbon emission targets of China, Japan, South Korea and many other regions, countries, cities and companies.
After announcing funding for a green economic recovery that will raise public spending to levels higher than the post-World War II Marshall Plan, 2020 should be the year the world hits the reset button on the global climate economy and renewable energy.
Instead of driving change, recovery packages recommend investing six times more in fossil fuels than in renewable energy. As shown in the figure below, despite all the promises made during the Covid-19 crisis, there is a clear lack of funding for renewable energy.
This year’s report asks a fundamental question: What prevents the world from using the Covid crisis as an opportunity for change? Senior Advisor of CAN International Dr. Stefan Singer said: “Unfortunately, the hard lesson from the epidemic is that many governments have not taken advantage of the unique opportunity to reduce carbon pollution and break the barrier to fossil fuels. 3. For the first time, the number of countries with renewable energy support policies has not increased.
Renewable energy targets set the course, but policy is needed to ensure we get there. Goals are often not achieved because the prevailing political structures are ineffective. The goals should be supported by policies that support the use of renewable energy through regulation and/or mandate. But this is not enough – the government has to work hard to reduce the use of fossil fuels and fossil fuel subsidies.
Fossil fuels are responsible for climate change, and contribute greatly to the loss of biodiversity and pollution. Switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy is an important step and making renewable energy the norm is not a question of technology or cost.
The electricity sector has improved a lot. Today, almost all new energy is renewable. More than 256 GW were added worldwide in 2020 – exceeding the previous record by almost 30%.
In more and more regions, including China, the EU, India and parts of the US, it is now cheaper to build new wind or solar PV plants than to operate existing electric power plants.
The business world is starting again. The amount of renewable electricity from power purchase agreements has grown significantly in recent years, with a record 23.7 GW from industrial PPAs in 2020. This is an increase of 18% despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The renewable energy transition is accelerating because it makes business sense and environmental sense. Renewable electricity is creating millions of jobs, saving businesses money and providing energy to millions. But businesses and governments need to move faster, not only environmentally, but to remain competitive in the 21st century economy powered by renewable energy,” said Sam Kimmins, head of RE100.
5. Global progress towards climate neutrality can be tracked by a simple key performance indicator: renewable energy.
The 2021 REN21 report clearly shows that the government needs to push renewable energy hard in all sectors. As seen in the figure below, only five of the world’s largest member economies in the G20 – EU-27, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom – have set 2020 targets for a fixed ratio of renewable energy in final energy consumption. The window of opportunity is closed unless efforts are significantly increased, and this will not be easy to do. Rana Adib, Executive Director at REN21 said:
“Governments should not only support renewable energy, but also quickly reduce fossil fuel consumption. The best way to increase growth is to make the use of renewable energy a key indicator of all economic activity. , all budgets and all public purchases. All ministries. should have short- and long-term goals. And plans for renewable energy with final expiration dates for fossil fuels should be implemented.
Nothing will happen until we measure the right indicators. Note that the urgency to accelerate the structural change from fossil fuels to renewable energy in all social and economic activities is not enough to pursue renewable energy goals, policies and investments. Global progress towards global climate and sustainable development goals can be measured by a simple key performance indicator: the share of renewable energy.
The distribution of renewable energy reflects the growth of energy demand, energy conservation, energy efficiency and emissions in the use of renewable energy and the reduction in the use of fossil fuels. Achieving a higher share of renewable energy can be used as a model for structural change in the renewable energy world.
Therefore, this index should be integrated in all levels of decision making. Since energy is everywhere, energy changes must be everywhere. A specific key performance indicator allows people to measure progress and ensure commitment globally, nationally, in regions, cities, in each economic sector and even within companies.
