Mechanical massage chairs promise comfort, relaxation and indulgence, but purchasing can be problematic. You have a number of designs to choose from – many that only vibrate, rather than grind, or advertise dubious features such as “air ionisation”, “body scan” and “chromotherapy”. After testing 16 models from some of the top brands, we think the Osaki OS-Champ is almost as good as a real massage. This chair is comfortable to sit on and has a solid construction, and it covers the entire body. In addition, it beat the most expensive massage chairs in key areas such as warmth and comfort.

This massage chair offers warmth and comfortable reclining — two must-have features — and our testers gave it top marks for comfort, build quality and overall usability.

The Osaki OS-Champ reclines until you’re on your back and covers your body in a faux leather cushion. Internal mechanisms massage your neck, back and thighs, and air cushions in the front and sides of the seat put pressure on your shoulders, arms, calves and legs. Its heating function warmed testers’ bodies better than any other model, and this massage chair is as luxurious and well-designed as we’ve seen. Also, Osaki backs it with a generous three-year warranty. Our only complaint is that the OS-Champ (like most massage chairs of this size) looks like a prop from Star Trek: Odyssey, and is sure to dominate any room’s decor.

This is the best portable massage chair we’ve tested. Easy to set up, use and pack for storage or transport. The MCS-845HJ massages the neck and shoulders, as well as the upper and lower back, and comes with a two-year warranty.

The HoMedics Shiatsu Elite II Massage Cushion (MCS-845HJ) is in a different league than our other options: It only massages the neck and back, it has to be attached to an existing chair to work, and it doesn’t have an adjustable recline feature. But it is better if you want a massage chair that you can fold and carry with you. Similar to our stationary models, this model has different massage styles and speed settings, but in addition, it is designed to be easily packed in your trunk for an overnight trip or out of sight between uses. Unlike other portable massage chairs we’ve tested, you can feel the heat from the heating element on the MCS-845HJ, and this chair is intuitive to set up and use. It’s comfortable, sturdy, and quite stylish compared to other portable models, and it’s backed by HoMedics’ two-year warranty.

I’ve been a science writer for over seven years, covering a wide range of topics from particle physics to satellite weather. Since joining Wirecutter in 2017, I’ve written about lap tables, surgical guards, rechargeable batteries, and more.

To write this guide, I spent 19 hours researching massage chairs and 11 hours testing portable massage chairs (also called massage cushions, massage pillows, or massage cushions, because they are not freestanding). A total of ten colleagues spent an additional 17 hours testing standing massage chairs in our test space in Long Island, New York. I also interviewed Alan Hedges, Professor Emeritus of Architecture and Environmental Analysis at Cornell University, and Vicki Bodner, a licensed massage therapist at the Cleveland Clinic.

Mechanical massage chairs have buttons that move along a track or air bags that inflate and slide to apply pressure, mimicking the kneading motion of a massage therapist’s hands. The most basic models cover one area, such as the lower back, while others offer a full-body experience. Some are free, about the size and weight of a young rhino and cost thousands of dollars. Others are small enough to fit inside a car and are more affordable (although they usually have fewer features and settings and must be strapped to an existing seat).

Contrary to what you might think, massage chairs aren’t just for nail salons and mall booths. You may have a difficult job, strenuous exercise, or a medical condition that affects your body. Maybe you’re looking for a new way to wind down at the end of the day or to ease the daily aches and pains of aging. Or maybe you’d like a massage but don’t like to be touched – for example, many autistic people are sensitive to touch, and some people find it difficult to touch after giving birth or being sexually assaulted.

There are few large, peer-reviewed studies on the health benefits of massage (see What is massage therapy? below), and even fewer that focus on the effectiveness of massage chairs for treating back pain and other ailments. But there’s no doubt that sitting in a massage chair is pleasant and relaxing—at least for some people. For example, a 2017 study of 186 healthy adults found that most participants reported feeling less anxious and relaxed after sitting in a full-body massage chair for 20 minutes, and most rated the experience as very pleasant.

Vicki Bodner of the Cleveland Clinic, who has been a licensed massage therapist for more than 20 years, says she knows people who like mechanical massage chairs, but she also says she personally finds them inadequate.

“The chair cannot be adjusted according to the needs of your body,” he explained. “When I massage, I focus on the muscles and tissues of your body. Sometimes the person I’m massaging may not say anything, but I can see how their body reacts to what I’m doing and I can ask, “Is this good pressure? Does this hurt?” know that for a seat.

In my experience, mechanical massage doesn’t feel as good as a massage from a licensed therapist or even a back rub from a partner, but it’s a great alternative when you can’t get the real thing. If you are deciding on a massage chair, it is important to find one that closely simulates a massage in person. Alan Hedge of Cornell University, who has studied ergonomics for more than four decades, told us that the two most important factors to look for in a massage chair are warmth (which helps promote blood flow) and comfort.

“The main goal of massage is to relax the muscles,” he said. “If you’re sitting straight, your muscles have to contract to help you.” Lying down reduces the pressure on your muscles. The more relaxed your muscles are, the more you will benefit.”

We did not consider any models specifically designed for gaming or driving, as we felt it was beyond the scope of this guide. You can also find office chairs with built-in massage features, but we didn’t try them because Hedge told us they don’t work in most situations (whether you’re sitting straight or leaning forward while working, both positions require you to tighten your muscles, defeating the purpose of the massage). ). However, Hedges said, some workplaces are purchasing massage chairs for their employees to use during screen breaks, which can reduce work-related injuries and increase productivity over time.

A Cochrane review published in 2015 defines massage therapy as “a treatment in which body parts are manipulated, held, moved and pressure applied.” The authors continue: “Massage therapy can increase blood volume in a specific area, improve tissue elasticity, reduce swelling due to fluid accumulation (edema), and strengthen the immune system.”

According to the Cochrane Library, the body that oversees the review, there is some evidence that massage therapy can provide short-term relief from neck pain, but more research is needed on the long-term effects. There is also some evidence that massage therapy can provide short-term relief from back pain (which is one of the most common reasons people go to the doctor or miss work and is a leading cause of disability worldwide), but there is little or There is no evidence that long-term effectiveness. Massage therapy is used to treat a number of other conditions, and there is evidence that it can be effective in some cases, such as improving the quality of life of people with HIV/AIDS. But more research is needed worldwide.

Massage therapists must be licensed to practice in most states and may also choose to be nationally certified. Unlike doctors, massage therapists have not completed medical school or earned a doctor of medicine (MD) degree, so they are not qualified to diagnose illnesses or prescribe treatments.

As with most personal care products, you can find hundreds – if not thousands – of mechanical massage chair models for sale, many of which are of questionable quality. To narrow down our search, we read dozens of editorials and online customer reviews and scoured the websites of major retailers like Amazon, Target and Walmart to identify the most widely available brands. From there, we further compiled our list based on the following criteria:
