Build Your Own Wood Countertop

Build Your Own Wood Countertop – What do all girls do in their free time when they’re not homeschooling or working two jobs? They refinish their wood kitchen counters. Haha yeah, sounds like a lot of fun, right?

So why would a mama like me want to take on this project? First, I’m going to take you back a few years.

Build Your Own Wood Countertop

In 2016, we began our major kitchen remodel along with our flooring. When I say major kitchen remodel, it’s because Jesse and I had already removed the wall, repaired the flooring, and updated it when we bought our house in 2003. Of course, it needs to be repeated over time. This time we pulled out our counters, cabinets, dishwasher and floors. Then, we built a custom double-oven cabinet, range hood, added a laundry utility sink, new windows, and even added our wood kitchen counters. This is another “before” remodel.

How To Clean Kitchen Countertops: Granite, Quartz, Marble & More

Okay, so these shots were taken in the fall of 2018, and we couldn’t be happier with the fruits of our labor.

You might be wondering what happened before and why I am in refinish mode after 3 years of use. At first, as mentioned in my Kitchen Reveal post with video tour, I used precatalyzed lacquer. why

When we were wrapping up our remodel, we were hitting deadlines as old man winter galloped. We lack space and facilities for reprocessing in a temperature-controlled environment. So, with that we opted for a precatalyzed lacquer based on my research and a recommendation from a chain paint store. However, our top pick is Waterlocks. I have used Waterlocks on our bathroom dresser on the vanity and on our dining table with amazing success.

Three years after we finished our kitchen, we had to redo the counters. Bummer! I was hoping it would stand up to all eight of us using it all day, all day, longer than this. So… now it’s time to finish what I wish I could have done in the beginning.

Why Waterlocks? Well, I put together this video explaining it to you, but I’ll also write it down for your reference.

Not only have I used this product in the past with great success, but it was my father who initially tried it. When my parents were building their dream home (a 6000 sq. ft. log home), they wanted the best. After talking to universities to find out what they used on their gym floors, he knew Waterlocks was for him. This finish they put on lasted 25 years! Nuff said for me.

If you want to read up on Waterlocks, you can find information on their site here. Also, both precatalyzed lacquers and waterlocks are suitable for food surfaces. The only major difference is that Waterlocks works better when brushed on and cures for 24 hours between coats.

First, using my sander, my respirator, and a whole lotta sanding pads, I begin my refinishing project. It’s kitchen lockdown! And it’s not funny. Oh, and I totally forgot to take before pictures, which is not my norm. My excuse is that we had 3 days to list our house and I wasn’t in my right brain.

Finally, after a day of sanding and cleaning, then three separate days of three coats using my brush, my counter was done. }

The manufacturer recommends one or two coats, I go with three. why Because that’s what I have on my bathroom vanity and dining room table.

For us, the hard-hit spots on our wooden kitchen counters are our kitchen sink and our laundry sink. Both have high water traffic, so it makes sense. I don’t believe the precatalyzed lacquer problem was a user problem, but I don’t know for sure.

There was some sort of bubbling in the finish under the drainboard and the same was in the laundry. However, I am happy to say that they are now refined and good to go. kitchen…

Finally, to wrap up my reclaimed wood kitchen counter, I’m happy to answer any questions you may have. I know many bloggers who like to use linseed oil or tung oil because it’s natural and rustic. However, that requirement is re-enforced every six months or earlier. It does not protect the wood from damage like poly. Additionally, you can use an epoxy which would be amazing if you like a glass-like finish. However, I wanted something to match my time-worn decor, so I went with a satin finish.

Also, if you watch my video above, I mentioned that I didn’t do one of the six counters. Mainly because I wanted a place to use for the week that my kitchen is under demo. However, it wasn’t as bad as the others. It looks good from this point of view.

If you look closely, you can see the wear and tear. I will deal with this warm weather. But, this is not a concern for now.

Go there! My kitchen lockdown is now a bust and ready to go. It’s time to party!

I’m still working on finishing the vanity for the bathroom remodel, but before I finish that project, I need to focus on building my DIY butcher block countertop for the vanity.

Laundry Room Diy Wood Countertop

This whole bathroom project is one of those “one thing leads to another” and “one project depends on another” kind of thing. Before I can really start putting this room together, I need to install the wainscoting on the walls. But part of it will be wrapped and serve as a backsplash for the vanity, so wainscoting must be installed.

That’s why I did the basic build on the vanity and now I’m moving on to the countertop. Next I will work on the new bathroom doors because I need the door casing in place before I can install the wainscoting. After I install the wainscoting, I will come back and finish the vanity and countertop. see? I actually have a method. It will all be over soon, however. 🙂

Yes! Absolutely! If you have intermediate building/woodworking skills and some basic tools, you can build your own butcher block countertop. There are probably several ways to go about it and it depends on how you want to use it. For this bathroom project, I’m building a 1/5-inch thick, durable butcher block countertop that will accommodate an undermount sink.

This will depend on many variables such as the type of wood and other details you want. If you’re happy with a less expensive wood like pine and the countertop will be used in an area like a utility room or bathroom, and you already have all the necessary tools, it might save you money to build your own. But if you want butcherblock for your kitchen countertop (ie, the busiest and hardest-wearing room in the house), you’ll probably want a harder wood like oak or a higher-quality wood like walnut, and maybe fancy edges like OG Edge. In such cases, it would be preferable to leave the building of the counter to professionals rather than DIY wood countertops.
