Diy Barn Door Track

Barn doors have become all the rage when it comes to interior decorating – whether they’re used as a sliding door, or as a centerpiece of decor. Not only do they add charm, elegance and rustic style to almost any decor – they can also be a great way to save space versus using a standard swing door.

These plans allow you to build a barn door of almost any size, using the same simple method. For ease of understanding, we show step by step the construction of a barn door to cover a standard interior door opening.

A sample is a standard 84″ high x 36″ barn door that can cover a typical space. You can simply adjust the size of your board to whatever door height or width you need and follow along to build whatever you need. The construction process is the same.

If I think I can do it on my own, I usually make a shopping list and head to Home Depot (amazing what you can fit in a Honda Accord Coupe, btw). If I need help then I try to convince Shad or mine. father (who is easier to sell), help me.

Sliding barn doors became all the rage a few years back and I knew once we bought our new home, I had to put one somewhere… somewhere. The problem is- it’s too expensive and I’m too quiet (you’ll see how expensive I am when I explain below how I got the barn door track for free). Home Depot started selling pre-made ones last year for $499 a pop—which is a lot cheaper than having it custom built. I made a plan for myself, and ended up spending $60 on wood and materials, and technically even less than that minus the cost of the Reese’s peanut butter cups I had to buy for my dad at the checkout line at Home Depot to cover. the plan. It was a very simple design and most of the tools we needed I already had.

How To Build & Install A Sliding Barn Door

Lumber from the list below + faux spray painted barn door hardware + Sliding barn door track (free, if you follow my instructions) + second person to help assemble

My cut list/wood was based on the dimensions of my door opening which was 37 inches by 83.5 inches- so I wanted to build a door that would completely cover the opening and trim when closed, so I decided on 37 inches by 86 inches. You will have to adjust the list purchasing wood for your private door opening. I try to minimize all dimensions- and because I’m cheap and want to use one piece of wood as much as possible, then I decide what is the cheapest step with my wood purchases (wood usually comes in. 6ft, 8ft, 10ft, and 12ft pieces).

1 piece of 1 inch x 4 inch x 8 ft Square Edge Whitewood Common Board Cut: up to 74 inches for the second long side piece.

Optional: You will need another piece of 1x4x8ft Square Edge Whitewood Common Board to install the sliding barn door track, if the door opening has an edge on it. (Otherwise your barn door will scrape the rim when opening and closing)

How To Make A Sliding Barn Door

Tip: When buying wood, make sure that the wood is not bent or bent in any way. You can do this by placing the wood on the floor, turning sideways, and looking at it with one closed eye (if that makes sense). Bent and bent wood will throw off the entire door.

However, recently Hobby Lobby has had some amazing barn door kits (which I wish were around when I built my door) for very cheap in the furniture section of the store (you can wait 50% off basically everything else. week, or use the 40% off coupon available online on their website).
