Covering the various aspects of this fast-evolving field, this comprehensive book includes the fundamentals and a comparison of current applications, while focusing on the latest, novel achievements and future directions. The introductory chapters explore the thermodynamic and electrochemical processes to better understand how electrolysis cells work, and how these can be combined to build large electrolysis modules. The book then goes on to discuss the electrolysis process and the characteristics, advantages, drawbacks, and challenges of the main existing electrolysis technologies. Current manufacturers and the main features of commercially available electrolyzers are extensively reviewed. The final chapters then present the possible configurations for integrating water electrolysis units with renewable energy sources in both autonomous and grid-connected systems, and comment on some relevant demonstration projects. Written by an internationally renowned team from academia and industry, the result is an invaluable review of the field and a discussion of known limitations and future perspectives.

High temperature electrolysis (HTE), which is the highly efficient electrolysis of steam at high temperature and utilises the heat and electrical power supplied by advanced nuclear reactor, provides a very promising way for massive production of hydrogen in the future. This book provides an overview of HTE technology including its key characteristics and challenges of solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) development. This book also examines the theory of electrical double layer, which is an essential electrochemical problem. The phenomenological theory of interfacial phenomena is also explored, with consideration of surface polarisation. Furthermore, the electrochemical reduction of nitrate has a great importance mainly for environmental and analytical purposes. This book provides a review of 225 papers dealing with the electrochemical reduction of nitrate. Other chapters introduce the application of electrochemical method for treatment of domestic wastewater and industrial wastewater, propose a novel point of view concerning some theoretical and practical aspects of isoelectric focusing, describe the electrochemical oxidation of strontium chloride (SrCl2) to strontrium chlorate employing a noble metal oxide coated anode and rotating stainless steel cathode, and report a preparation method suitable for requirements of industrial applications to graft active polymer films. Experimental studies on electrodeposition of silver-indium (Ag-In) alloys are also described, as well as the application of the electrochemical discharge phenomenon to synthetic chemistry, nanoparticle synthesis and micromachining.

Asking Google for different applications of electrolysis, interesting results can be noticed: electrolysis and hair removal - about 284 000 000 web pages, water electrolysis - about 7 440 000 web pages and industrial electrolysis - about 2 540 000 results. In this book three most important applications of technological electrolysis are discussed - water electrolysis (hydrogen production), industrial electrolysis and environmental electrolysis. Authors of the chapters are recognized specialists in their respective research fields and the presented material is not only from reviews and literature sources, but also original results. We hope that the reader will find useful information in the chapters of this book and are certain that the science can reveal unexpected discoveries even tomorrow, if current progress is at hand or on a shelf.
