App To Delete Text Messages On Someone Elses Phone – I’m on the same level as you. There is no single best writing app. Unless you need a special feature or two, the best text messaging app will be the one that the people you want to message also use. Depending on where you are in the world, it could be iMessage, WhatsApp, Viber, LINE or SMS.
But if, for some reason, you can choose which messaging app to use—or convince the people you want to message to switch—these are the five best messaging apps to choose from.
All of our best apps collections are written by people who have spent most of their careers using, testing, and writing software. We spend dozens of hours researching and testing applications, using each application as intended, and evaluating it based on the criteria we set for the category. We never get paid to feature apps in articles or to link to websites – we appreciate loyal readers who have asked us to provide real opinions about the categories and apps we review. For more details on the process, read the full explanation of how we choose apps to feature on the blog.
As a kid in the 90s, I’ve been texting since cell phones were ubiquitous and cheap (and a year or two before that, to be honest). I’ve also used texting apps for professional reasons—both to communicate with remote colleagues and to review apps.
I still think the best writing practice is usually when people actually respond to you. If it’s an SMS or a smoke alarm, I have full permission to use it. So when it came to making the list, it freed me to be very strict about the admission requirements. Neither iMessage, SMS nor Android Messages made this list. Google also did not call for its latest announcement. A big reason to use one of these apps is because your friends do.
However, if you’re starting a group of friends, a desert island colony, or a fan club, and you can choose the devices you use, here are some things to look out for in messaging apps:
Text messaging apps use an internet connection to send and receive messages. This is different from SMS, which uses the carrier’s own protocols to send and receive messages anywhere over a mobile connection (even on a weak connection with no data). While text messages come with a fee—either per message or bundled with your cell phone plan—messages sent using data-only text apps will be free (even if the app itself isn’t).
I tested over 30 different apps to compile this list. Many fell through because they didn’t meet the above criteria or because they just weren’t fun to use. I spent time checking and texting every app that looked like a candidate for inclusion – plus, as I said before, this is a category I have a lot of experience with, so I spent a lot. in all previous applications.
WhatsApp is the absolute master of free mobile messaging in most of the world. Launched in 2009, WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook in 2014 as a way to send messages over a data connection other than SMS. Since then, the service has expanded its services and user base. As of 2022, it has about two billion daily users, and it’s easy to see why: it’s an incredibly flexible service.
The app is a full messaging client that supports text chats as well as images, short videos and voice messages. There is a status feature that allows you to share an Instagram-like story with your friends. You can also send files (up to 2 GB in size) to other WhatsApp users. Conversations take place in the form of one-on-one conversations with other WhatsApp users or group chats with up to 512 participants.
Despite being the world’s most popular messaging service and owned by Facebook’s parent company Meta, WhatsApp has end-to-end encryption for all communications. Everything you send, including file transfers, is fully encrypted. Encrypted messages can be removed from WhatsApp servers even after delivery.
WhatsApp has a different look and feel. A double tick next to each message indicates that a message has been sent (one tick) and sent (two check marks). If two markers turn blue, you know the recipient has read the message. You can customize your experience by changing the chat wall under app settings, naming groups, and setting custom alerts for each chat.
WhatsApp users can make free voice and video calls with other users of the service. Group calls can be made with up to 32 people, and all communications are secured by the same end-to-end encryption. You can download the WhatsApp desktop apps for Windows and Mac, or access the service through a browser at web.whatsapp.com, though your smartphone must be activated either way.
Viber is another great and versatile entry in the messaging space with millions of users worldwide. The app combines text and media messaging with a free voice and video calling service.
Chat with individuals or create group chats with up to 250 participants where you can instantly share voice and video messages without making a phone call. Perfect when you’re too busy to talk and too lazy to write. While many other apps include voice messaging (such as WhatsApp above), Viber makes it just as easy to send a video message to a personal connection. Additionally, GIFs and stickers are built into your chats to liven up your conversations.
End-to-end encryption is standard across all Viber one-on-one and group chats. However, channels and communities are not end-to-end encrypted (because new members cannot see your chat history). This is a small security sacrifice for better service. In addition to free voice and video calls to other Viber users, a service called Viber Out lets you make as many calls as you want to any mobile or landline in the world for $5.99 a month. It’s like Skype, except with better security methods and a nicer smartphone app.
Viber uses a minimal and minimal design with an optional dark mode in the appearance menu. Chats and calls are sent to separate tabs, and non-core Viber features (such as the sticker market) are placed in a separate third tab. If a chat is too busy, swipe left and select or tap your finger. If you have an important conversation you want to access, record it.
Viber also offers communities – basically large group chats with strangers that you can join or start. These public chats can have an unlimited number of members and give admins powerful control over managing their chats: control who is in the group and who can post, or change the look of the community with a new group background and description. You can find communities based on things like location, hobbies, and favorite groups. Think Reddit, but more like a group chat.
Where Viber fits in is the inclusion of the entire app. With sticker shops, chats of all kinds, and even the occasional ad, it’s a less satisfying experience than WhatsApp — especially if you don’t use its unique features like Viber Out.
Telegram was one of the original messaging apps to emphasize the importance of security, though it uses a slightly more comprehensive encryption approach to store communications on its servers. It allows you to log in from multiple devices, which WhatsApp or Viber cannot do. Although both services offer a desktop app, all messages are still sent and received through the phone. If it’s blocked or not nearby, you can’t log in, but you can with Telegram.
With Telegram, you can make voice and video calls, and send messages, photos, videos, and files to other Telegram users. You can even create group chats with 200,000 participants or channels with unlimited subscribers.
If you want end-to-end encryption, you can enable it with Telegram’s secret feature: Start a new message and select New Secret Chat from the menu. (Alternatively, you can make a voice call.) For text messages, you can also set a self-destruct timer for hidden messages you send so they don’t hang around when they serve their purpose. Private chats are not stored in the cloud like normal chats. But even regular Telegram chats are encrypted, stored on the server and then decrypted when downloaded. This gives you the option to choose between highly secure messages and an easier, slightly less secure option. You can use both as you wish.
Telegram supergroups (with up to 200,000 members) and channels where one-way messages can be broadcast to an unlimited audience are a more popular connection than my experience.
