The Caravan Sports Infinity Zero Gravity is an affordable zero gravity chair. While it didn’t win any awards from our judges for outstanding comfort, durability or portability, its reclining ability sets it apart. After all, portability probably isn’t at the top of your list of features you want if you want an outdoor lounge chair. With such a low price tag, you can buy a pair (or replace one if it breaks frequently) for less than the cost of many other camping chairs. We think this zero-gravity camping chair is pretty cool, and it might just be the chair for you.

We knew right away we were using a special kind of camping chair – the only one in our review that reclines! This automatically classifies it as a special interest chair rather than any other old camping chair. That being said, no one wants to spend money on a chair that is uncomfortable and durable! We went ahead and put it through all the same tests as the other camping chairs we’ve reviewed to see how it compares. Although the caravan didn’t make it to the top of our list, it has some merits and may be just what you’re looking for. Check out our thoughts on its comfort, portability, durability and ease of installation to help determine if this chair has a place in your life.

The Caravan Sports Infinity Zero Gravity Seat is good, it depends on what you want from a camping seat. If you’re trying to replace your La-Z-Boy on the go, this chair will give you the satisfying recline position typical of a zero-gravity chair. The seat is attached to the frame with bungee cords for added relaxation, and adjustable (or removable) headrest/lumbar support bars help you customize your experience. The seat and back material is also breathable mesh, which makes naps in the sun even more charming.

However, Caravan is designed for people of below average height. Testers who were about 5 feet 11 inches or taller had a hard time reclining the chair comfortably because their feet extended past the footrest. This means they either have to lean, with their knees bent to rest their feet on the bar, or try to find a comfortable way for the metal bar to insert into their Achilles tendon while trying to relax. Caravan does sell a “jumbo” version of the chair, but it’s only wider, not longer. The armrests on this chair are also made of hard, unforgiving plastic and are very thin. We also felt the stability of the chair was a bit risky. Even with the locking mechanism in action, it has plenty of extra wiggle room in both the horizontal and vertical positions. Overall, we give this chair a 6 out of 10 for comfort.

At 18 pounds 11 ounces, the Caravan is the heaviest chair we’ve ever tested – heavier even than the two-seater Kelty Low Loveseat! It also doesn’t fold down to a portable size. While it folds thin, it doesn’t compress in width or depth, so it’s still big.

Adding to the portability challenge, there are no features that allow the caravan to be easily carried around, making it difficult to figure out how or where to grab it. It also has no latches to keep it closed, which means if you grab it in the wrong place, it will try to open while you’re wearing it! Overall, we give this chair a 3 out of 10 for portability.

Our reviewer didn’t think it was a very durable chair. The stretch on the edge seems like an obvious point of failure, and Caravan doesn’t offer any alternatives like some other zero-gravity chair makers. The locking mechanism also seems flimsy at best, and even with the lock fully engaged, a violent shake or jerk on this chair can easily change the recline position.

The Caravan is rated at just 300 pounds, which is about average for the chairs we tested. However, there is a lot of play in this chair, which made our tester feel a little uncomfortable. Although our reviewer did not break this chair in the durability test, numerous other consumer reports complained about the short lifespan of several different components of the Caravan. Overall, we give this chair a 4 out of 10 for durability.

Since Caravan does not compress, installing it is as easy as pulling the sides of the frame apart, like a traditional metal folding chair. That said, the biggest issue we found setting up this chair was that the caravan’s footpegs are a bit long when fully upright, making it difficult to fully extend the legs. A few times we thought we had it set up right, and when we sat in it, the legs stuck out a few more inches, causing us to briefly panic as the entire chair was abandoned.

Just like a traditional folding chair, Caravan folds away. Folding this chair is easy as long as you keep it fully upright. No tricks, but if you’re looking for handles or clasps to fold or carry around, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Overall, we give this chair a 9 out of 10 for how easy it is to set up.

The fact that this camp chair reclines is a great feature! This gives this chair a degree of utility that many other camping chairs in this review cannot boast of. The Caravan also comes with an adjustable headrest that you can slide all the way down for lumbar support, or remove if you don’t want to use it.

This chair is best for lying down – and maybe sleeping too! We think it’s perfect for a deck or other space where you don’t have to move it around because it’s not very portable. If you are looking for a chair to lean in and sleep, this is the one for you. However, if you’re looking for something you can move around and take with you to outdoor concerts, soccer games, or the beach, you might be better off carrying a more portable chair like the REI Camp Stowaway Low or the ALPS Mountaineering King. When you consider how much you can spend on other models of zero gravity chairs, we think the Caravan Sports Infinity Zero Gravity is excellent value for money. Often found online for well below MSRP, this chair will allow you to rest at ease. If you are looking for something that will last you for years or that you can easily carry around, then this chair is probably not for you. All in all, if you’re in the market for a zero-gravity chair, we don’t think the chair’s price tag is a compelling reason not to give it a try.
