Woodworking Rocking Chair

Woodworking Rocking Chair – After 9 years of building these beautiful pieces of functional art it is a pleasure to share my craft. I am a job shop, so you will learn my techniques to work accurately but also quickly.

What to expect? You will build your entire chair with your own hands, we prepare the blanks so you can start making a chair on day 1! We have a lot to do, so we will work 10-hour days, with a 30-minute lunch break. I will build the same chair as you, so you will see exactly how and why I do each step before you complete each step. By the end of the 2 to 6 day course depending on which chair you choose, you will leave with a fully produced chair that you have painted and got a taste for sandblasting. The fabrication stage usually takes about the same amount of time for everyone, although the cutting and sanding can vary depending on what speed you want and feel comfortable working with.

I will show examples of what we make from finished and unfinished chairs. The task is then demonstrated on my own chair that I build next to the class. As the course progresses and your skills will determine the amount of my involvement in the construction, I want you to build as much as possible of your own chair.

Lounge Chair Rocker — George Nakashima Woodworkers

The wood we use is salvaged from the surrounding town in partnership with local tree service companies and homeowners. Have we already said that the workshop is on a beautiful farm where we have 2 sawmills to grind the logs into planks, then we can dry them in one of our 2 ovens.

If you are traveling here, we are 45 minutes from the Toronto airport. Guelph would be the best city to spend your nights. Daily lunch is included.

All materials are included, if you have your own hearing/eye protection please bring it, if not we will provide. You will take home a set of patterns and an understanding of how to add to your collection.

By buying now, you pay a 50% deposit. Day 1 of the course the remaining balance must be paid in full.

Sculpted Rocking Chairs

You can stay home and try to figure things out for yourself (and make mistakes), or you can spend 4 days learning from Paul and Justin how to do it right the first time! This four day course is full of instruction, new skills, humor and great people. Paul, Justin and of course Aimee have put on a great course and I would highly recommend anyone interested in building a Maloof style chair to look no further! I was so impressed with the drinking chair course that I immediately signed up for the next rocking chair course. Great job Canadian Woodworking!!

I took the rocking chair course a few years ago and in addition to building an incredible rocking chair I also got really into woodworking. I found Paul to be a great teacher and using the skills he taught me, I used his plans (and walnut wood) to build stools and 90-degree desks. Who knew you could learn so much in 6 days. Since that course I have been following his progress on Instagram. His work is not only incredible, but also inspiring.

Sam Maloof: Preserving The Iconic Woodworker’s Home

One of the most famous woodworkers and furniture designers of the 20th century, Californian Sam Maloof practiced his craft from the early post-World War II era until 2009, the year of his death. His designs for chairs, tables and stands were so original that the world at large coined a new expression: “Maloof style”. Sam’s furniture showcases sleek, graceful lines, sculpted parts that fit perfectly together, and joints that evoke beauty as well as strength and durability. The Maloof rocker shown here is by far the most iconic piece created by this artist.

Carrying on the legacy of Maloof, Mike Johnson mixes the rocker in the front leg with a file and a well-trained eye.

Today, many woodworkers sell “Maloof-style” rockers, a tribute to this single famous piece of furniture. But for a truly authentic Maloof rocker, you should contact Mike Johnson at the Maloof workshop in Alta Loma, California. Having studied under Sam Maloof for over 30 years, Mike has the knowledge, skill and (last but not least) legal permission to reproduce this piece of furniture. Mike pulls from a massive inventory of 8/4 (2″) and 16/4 (4″) stocks. The rockers are typically made of black walnut, figured maple, rosewood, cherry or sirkota. Ebony serves as an accent for screw plugs and decorative bands.

Strength without bulk. Maloof designed a special dado and crank joint to anchor the rocker leg to the seat.

Luna Wood Rocking Chair

Mike relies on Sam’s original plywood templates for the chair parts, tracing their shapes on selected stock. He saw the parts, and leaves enough wood to carve and mix. The velcro seat is made of five dowel-jointed pieces that cut into small angles to create the neat curve. To create the gracefully curved feet of the rocker, 3/16″ thick strips are glued together over a form. The legs attach to the seat with a unique “nut-and-ratchet joint” that Maloof invented to to maximize adhesive area and mechanical strength (see drawing). The important sculpting that gives the chair its characteristic appearance is done with a number of hand tools – spokes, scrapers and rasps. But air-powered sanders and grinders also come into play. final form, Mike and his son Steven sand it through 400 grit, finish with oil/poly blend and wax More information about Sam Maloof, the company today, and his foundation at sammaloofwoodworker.com.is no longer supports older versions of your browser for to ensure user data remains secure Please update to the latest version.

Description : "..."The Stick Chair Book" is divided into three sections. The first section, "Thinking About Chairs," introduces you to the world of common stick chairs, plus the tools and wood to build them. The second section - "Chairmaking Techniques" - covers every process involved in making a chair, from cutting stout legs, to making curved arms with straight wood, to carving the seat. Plus, you'll get a taste for the wide variety of shapes you can use. The chapter on seats shows you how to lay out 14 different seat shapes. The chapter on legs has 16 common forms that can be made with only a couple handplanes. Add those to the 11 different arm shapes, six arm-joinery options, 14 shapes for hands, seven stretcher shapes and 11 combs, and you could make stick chairs your entire life without ever making the same one twice. The final section offers detailed plans for five stick chairs, from a basic Irish armchair to a dramatic Scottish comb-back. These five chair designs are a great jumping-off point for making stick chairs of your own design. Additional chapters in the book cover chair comfort, finishing and sharpening the tools. From the author: "When I first wrote 'The Stick Chair Book' in 2021, I was also fighting cancer. So I hammered out the text with urgency and the desire to record every fragment of information I knew about chairmaking. "To be fair, that's usually how I go about writing all my books. But then I typically take a couple months off, put the manuscript aside, then revisit it with fresh eyes and a sharpened pen. My final revisions remove about 10-20 percent of the original material. The stuff I cut is usually chapters that don't match the tone of the rest of the text. Or I snip sections that aren't as relevant as when I first wrote them. I also smooth out the writing and add bits of information I'd forgotten during the first brain-to-fingers dump. "And that's exactly what I've done for this revised edition. As a result, the text is 10.1 percent shorter than the first edition. It's more to the point. And it's where the manuscript would have ended up under normal conditions..."--Publisher's website....
