Sitting may not seem like active movement, but it actually involves everything in the body, from bones and muscles to tendons, cartilage and joints. “For you to sit comfortably for long periods of time, it is important that the body enjoys the right support in the right places,” explains material developer Anders Bergner.

Together with Bergmund, Anders and the team conducted new research studies to develop the shape of the seat and find the optimal angle between seat and backrest. This has led to some interesting insights into the human body – for example that all human sitting bones are actually very similar. “This is true whether someone is 1.85 meters tall or much shorter. So the bowl under the seat has got a geometry that fits 99% of the world’s population.”
Polyester in seat cushions and backrests has short vertical fibers that provide better elasticity than more tangled fibers. Anders and his team then developed an innovative strategy to increase seating comfort by designing seat upholstery. “It’s comparable to making a waffle.
