This mirror was delivered faster than I expected. In this Instructable I will show how I restored a vintage metal chair from the late 1950s or early 1960s. I’m not restoring this to its original beauty, but I hope to get another 20-30 years of use out of it.
About 3 years ago I found these chairs on a Sunday afternoon on the street at a neighbor’s house. Sunday on the sidewalk means things either go to the trash or wait for the “pickers” to drive into the pickup truck to retrieve any scrap metal they can find to take to the junkyard for $$$.
The moment I saw them I thought WOW! I haven’t seen a chair like this in years, at least not in use. So I pulled the road to get it and threw it at the back of my truck to get it going. At first I was a little scared because they looked like valuables to throw away. Then the host came out laughing and said, “I knew they wouldn’t last long.” Of course, I then had to ask if they were coming out of the trash and asked if I could see it. He said they were all mine and invited me into his backyard to find another piece of “junk”. However, that part of the junk will be saved for another story and tutorial.
Retro Metal Lawn Chairs That Are Still Stylish In 2021
Here we are three years later and I have finally reached this project. Based on the shape of the chairs I had to research how to approach this project. My options were to spend a lot of money to restore them or sweat it out. I was afraid of sweating and spending less money on equipment.
As you can see from the pictures, each chair had different levels of weathering, rust and flaking. Each chair has probably been painted 3-5 times over the past 40-50 years. Popular colors over the years include yellow, red, white, purple, and green.
Since receiving the chair, which has been moved around my backyard several times over the past 3 years, I have had a lot of comments from family and friends. The last comment was “good camouflage pattern”. However, many were interested in seeing what would happen to them when I started working for them.
My first thought was to give it an external look and then sand everything down to bare metal and start with a clean coat and powder paint afterwards. An online search showed that restored chairs close to the original can sell for $ 100- $ 200 each.

But after considering the amount of surface rust, rust through the legs, the time to spend on the project and my budget, I decided to revamp and maintain the natural backyard life, decor and conversation piece. All in all, a revived piece of American!
Klean Strip Sander Deglosser: Use this to add a new tacky finish to old paint. It basically destroys the glossy finish of the old paint.
Rust-Oleum Rusty Metal Primer: Use this to bond the rust and allow the top coat to adhere.
Sherwin Williams all surface enamel: use as a top coat. The beautiful and durable coating provides weather and sunlight resistance and maintains the luster. Thicker polish tends to cover better than latex or oil paint when working with larger areas of color.

NOTE: As I said before, my goal was not to get the chair back as good as new. This would cost a couple of hundred dollars for sandblasting. My goal was to renew things that could be used more effectively.
There is evidence that the original finish had a glossy sheen. Much more in areas that do not receive rain, snow and sun. Whenever you paint over an old oil-based surface, you need to consider the surface to be painted. You have two options here. You can use sandpaper to harden the surface or use a chemical solution to break the shine. As this was a large three-seater job, I decided to use a deglosser to be sure.
This is a water-based solution, so smoking is minimal. However, as you can see, I still use rubber gloves to protect my skin from chemicals. Do this in a well-ventilated area and be sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions. My
